Good critical care apps for IPOD

Hi,

anyone using apps on IPOD that you find really helpful working in the ICU? There are so many choices out there, but maybe you have tried some and know which ones are better? Thanks for advice :)

One of the best Critical Care apps that I've used is called Fast Facts for Critical Care by Kathleen White.. very useful but doesn't have an option to preview before buying.. http://fastfactsforcriticalcare.com/J/

I just followed the link, looks like it's only for pda's not an ipod. A few nurses I work with have the book version. They use it all the time. itunes has a podcast called icu rounds. I've only put 1 on my ipod and haven't gotten around to listening to it. It's more mini lecture type of thing.

I second the post by kwortman!! I use the hard copy version of FastFacts for Critical Care but I have downloaded the FastFacts for IABP and it's great!! There is definitely an iPhone/iPod version . . . go to the app store and search for FastFacts!!

I use my iPhone all the time at work. Here's what I have:

Nursing Central: includes drug reference, lab reference, Tabers, and some random journal articles. I use the drug reference all the time, it's very hand to have at the bedside when I go in and realize I've forgotten to look up compatibility or something. The rest of the stuff I don't use as much anymore, which is why I didn't renew my subscription (but I get to keep everything I already have.)

DrugInfusion: Use this all the time to figure out non-weight based IV rates. Math is not my strong point, so I use this to triple check myself. You can also do weight based calculations and they have a lot of drips already programmed in. This app is one of my favorites. Only $0.99.

ABG: This is a free ABG calculator. I use it to double check myself after I look at a gas and come up with what I think it is. Can't really beat it for the cost.

ECG Guide: Think it was like 4 bucks or something. I use this when I see weird blocks that we don't get very often and I need to re-familiarize myself with everything related to that rhythm.

Epocrates: Don't use it a lot because I find it somewhat cumbersome. I have the free version and I have used it for unit conversions and sometimes drug compatibility.

Calculator: The free one that comes with the iPhone...use it constantly. Love it.

MedScape: I have it but I've actually never used it. Need to play around. This one was also free.

I love my iPhone and it basically has my entire life on it, so it's never far from my reach even when I'm not making phone calls. I think there is great potential for medical apps but it appears that the development has kind of petered out as of late. Looking forward to a good CCRN app, for one. The possibilities are really limitless especially when it comes to these $0.99 apps.

The original poster wrote ipod so that's what I thought she was talking about. not an iphone. I was thinking about getting a droid, I wonder if I can get those same apps for that?

I have an iPhone but previously I had an iPod Touch which could support all of the apps I mentioned above. I loved my iPod touch... Don't know about a droid, you'd have to check their app store. Sorry for any confusion, guess I thought "ipod" was kind of a catch-all phrase for Apple products that can use apps. :)

I just got an iphone and I had my first day in the SICU with it and here's what I used:

  • medcalc for drip rates, RASS, PAO2/FiO2
  • google translate for spanish translation. I havent found a text-to-speech app yet but that would be ideal. the translator is nice for remembering your recent searches and showing them when you open it up so you dont have to perform any extra clicks to see your frequently used phrases
  • neuromind to visualize where the heck the posterior fossa is and explain it to family
  • micromedix on my iphone is actually faster than the bedside computer at times
  • chronolite to set timers
  • ihandy level to level transducers when the ruler isnt around
  • convert units to convert units
  • iphone calculator to check dosage rates at the bedside and total I&O

All are free! I never thought I would get an iphone but I needed a new phone and it sounded like the best bang for my buck and now Im like "it's changed my whole life" hahaha. Now I am never bored, dont waste time when I get home checking me email, and have lots of handy gadgets and formulas to use at the bedside :heartbeat
