One of the girls in my orientation as a new grad just graduated from goldenwest and was telling us horror stories......

I mean I don't know how credible she is b/c I don't really KNOW her, but she was pretty open about how she wished she went to another school.

Again, just what I have heard, but since you aren't actually @ that school yet, just something to think about.

ahh thanks for the input. everyone ive known that went there hated it, but felt like the 2nd year rn was not as bad as the first.

I have worked with a lot of GW nursing students in various semesters. It's hit and miss. The wonderful, with it students are usually already LVN's or have some CNA experience under their belts. I have had positive experiences with the instructors as well, they seem to be very kind and patient, unlike some instructors I have encountered who just LOSE it right there on the unit with their kids!

One of my nursing school buds was completing her very last hour of preceptorship with "Golden waste of Time" when her instructor completely sabatoged her and failed her. She went thru the entire grievance process with the school, however it was very clear that the instructor had a personal vendetta against this poor girl from the beginning.

She transferred to another 2 year program in the 3'rd semester, passed with flying colors and now works L and D in the Riverside area.

I am in third semester at GWC and I really like it. I mean I don't have any basis for comparison but I like the instructors (mostly) and the administration. From my experiences the LVN students are hit and miss (no offense guys :) ). I have also gotten a lot of positive feedback from the facilities that we go to.

I graduated from Golden West College RN-program in 2004. I never experienced any horror stories but I did hear about some horrible instructors back in the 80's. I had a great experience during nursing school. I even got to perform about 40 IV starts by graduation, i missed at least 10 of those, haha.

P.S. I agree with Jonathan RN, about "a golden waste of time" is a stab in the heart.

I thought 2nd semester was the hardest semester of nursing school. It was just hard because there was alot of paperwork due each week and its hard when your trying to do pre-clinal papers, assignments, studying for test, practicing lab skills, and the reading. Doing all that pre-clinical work was exhausting, especially the medications part, but well worth it. Once you start 4th semester, you dont' do pre-clinical work-ups. 3rd and 4th semester, you dont have as much paperwork as 2nd Semester, but still alot.

I agree with Latino

I'm in 3rd right now and I'd have to say that 2nd was much harder (as far as workload). I don't know about 4th, but once you pass 2nd, you can take a nice deep breath!

In 4th semester, there is not that much paperwork. In peds rotation, there is a 7 page assessment paper due each week on 1 of your patients. But the good thing, no more major NPR's! JonathanRn, you should consider doing a summer nurse externship at one of the hospitals before going into 4th. It really helped with my time-management, and multi-tasking skills. It made 4th semester clinicals less stressful. Also take the summer EKG class, if you signed up for med/surg & critical care first. It really helps when they go over it in lecture.

I've just finished 2nd semester and I have to say that it was a semester from hell, especially my program is accelerated. Most students failed from the program because of Med-Surg lecture. First semester was also tough for me. My third semester will be starting on May 2. I know I have to study my tail off for Med-Surg 2. And about Peds and OB, pray for me guys. I have no experience in these areas.

Danny D, OB & Peds is not that bad. I thought I was going to hate it and feel weird in those units, but i actually enjoyed them. No problems with any of the patients in OB. Peds rotation was fun.
