Going per diem, need secondary job ideas

Published

Hello all! Within the next few months I'm hoping to go per diem at my current LTC facility. But before I do, I want to get a secondary prn job to insure adequate hours. Fortunately, I have a lot of options; but I don't know what to focus on. I really enjoy LTC work, so I wouldn't mind going prn at another facility as well. But I also enjoy a variety, so I wouldn't mind trying something different. I'm also slightly worried that having two prn jobs at LTC facilites might not grant me enough hours that I may need. I have experience in med-surg, ortho, ER, and LTC now, so I feel like I'm equipped to try anything new. I'd prefer to avoid the hospital, but am willing to go there as long as its not med-surg. Any ideas? Any prn people out there care to share how many prn jobs they have (and how they insure they get enough hours?)????

I've had my school nurse job for several years now, but before that, I did a few years of just PRNing. I worked at a LTC facility, Home Health, subbed for school nurse, and helper at a preschool (not a money maker, but oh so fun!). I was always as busy as I wanted to be. Just make sure you pick PRN jobs that let you decide which days you want to work, and not one that just puts you on the schedule where they need. That is crucial to making multiple jobs work.

I made 8k mowing yards last year...that's prn.

I have two per diem jobs and no FT or PT positions. Between the two I get enough hours to equal a full time position, but with the added perks of:

Getting the exact schedule I want every single time.

Not working any major holidays.

Making $20/hr than regular staff do.

I buy private health insurance that is quite affordable. There is no need for PTO because I already can take off as much time as I want.

My employer allows per diem RNs to get the 403b match too so I take advantage of that.

Overall my point to you is there is a lot of perks by doing so.

I also work pool in a pedi Urgent Care.

Home health or private duty could work.

Best wishes.
