41 and going into NURSING? HELP

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi everyone!

First off my name is sandy and i Live in Akron ohio with my hubby and my children...

All my life I have always wanted to be a nurse and I think I finally have a GREAT chance of a lifetime to go to school and become a wonderful nurse. BUT at the same time im really nervous and wondering if I can even do it... Im 41 years old... that means I would be 44 before i would even graduate.. UHGGGGGG Its been a LONG time since i have been in school also. I did do a medical Assistant course back in 93 and passed it fine.. BUT well ya know.. this is totally different...

The last test to be given is on Jan 23rd. SO i have ordered a few study guides to help me (hopefully) make it thru the entrance test... Any other great ideas? ESP in Math and Science.. YIKES

Just wanted to stop by and introduce myself and hopefully i will be around more often...

I'll be 44 when I graduate, too. I had to take algebra in summer school this summer, and I am so glad I did. When I started chemistry class, it was obvious that you really do need the algebra. When I took the TEAS this Fall, I scored very well on the English part, thought I did great on the math, and totally guessed every one of the science questions. Turns out I only got about 83% of the math right, and got over a 90% on the science part. I realized later that after all the anxiety I had about taking that test, it was not that big of a deal. We'll get through this!

Go for it Sandy! I am 41 and went back to school a year and a 1/2 ago. I take 2 classes at a time and am doing well. I know since I am alittle older and wiser, I am doing good and enjoying meeting new people. You certainly can do it!

I'll be 45 when I graduate...oh that hurts. No sweat. If it is what you love, then it's not work. I didn't study more then 2 hours for the NET, but that's me. I found the test rather simplistic for an entrance exam. No disrespect to those who thought otherwise....we're all different.

After a long career in another field, I started taking the pre-reqs for nursing at age 57. Two years later, all the pre-reqs are done (with straight A's, I might add) and I am madly applying to multiple nursing programs.

Whoever said your age is an asset is right. My memory certainly isn't as sharp as it was when I was 19, but better focus, a stronger sense of self-discipline, and much improved study techniques more than compensate.

That's all by way of saying that you can absoutely do this!

Sandy:

Which school are you going to and which degree are you pursuing? I am an older student attending one of Kent State's regional campuses. Our instructors are very understanding and I think pretty good teachers. Hope all goes well. I am much more able to focus on the impt stuff rather than the younger crowd because you realize the impt stuff in life with maturity. You will probably find that there are quite a few older students in whatever program you are going to attend. God bless.

thank you, thank you, thank you!

you ladies are awesome. i'm 32 and will be starting my prerequisites in january at a community college. i really feel focused and ready to study more than ever and just loved reading all your positive posts!

sandy, i wish you all the best in your new path! please let us know how it goes tomorrow!

I also was in the accounting field for the pass 16 years; after some uncontrollable happenings I lost my job. I got so depressed that I didn't want to go back into the field. So I decided to change to nursing after discussing it with my husband. Then I felt like I made the decision because of him and I didn't feel like that is what I truely wanted to do and I still wanted to be in accounting. When I got into AP 2, that's when I knew I was on the right path for my future. I am will be finishing my last 3 pre-requisites, Micro, Sociology & Human Development, Spring 2009. I applied for the nursing program one week ago and will not know anything till around April. Long waiting and lots of praying!! Anyway, 41 doesn't mean anything! I am currently 43 and will be 44 in January so I will start nursing school at 44, if I get accepted the first time which will start Summer 2009. That means that I will be 46 when I graduate! None the less, I am so excited about getting into nursing school that I can hardly stand myself!

GOOD LUCK AND YOU CAN DO IT!!:anpom:

Specializes in TCU.

I am 45 and just completed my first semester of NS. I am a single mom of 3 boys (2 are adults: 24 and 26), and a 7 year old son (he is autistic). It is a struggle sometimes, but I LOVE it! I will graduate May '09 when I'm 46, plus there are quite a few ladies older than me-in their late 40's and 50's!

Just do it! You won't regret it!

Youre 41 not 101. You will still work 20+ years by the time you graduate. I went back to school at 36 and am now a new RN at 41. I can only promise you one thing....if you do this.... you wont ever regret it.

I'm 47 and just finished my first semester of NS. I'm doing way better now than I would have 20 years ago. Go for it!

As for the TEAS. This is the test that I had to take for my school as well. ATI sells a study guide that covers all the topics on the test (actually I felt the practice questions were more difficult than the actual test). It is really just basic knowledge, not even on a high school level. I did have to spend time practicing the math as you can't use a calculator and I'd not done long division in AGES! With a little study time you should do fine!

Hi everyone! I just turned 40 and am taking pre-reqs/co-reqs for nursing, although I'm still not completely 100% sure I will go into nursing, mainly I think because I have anxiety about doing invasive medical procedures on people. (If I do go for it though, I want to be in L&D or Post partum.) If I apply at the first available time I can, I would start a little over a year from now and graduate in Dec. 2011 at the age of just turned 43! I think there are PLENTY of people this age, going back to school now for various career changes. In some ways I think it is not optimal that as a society, we tell 18-yr olds to go to college and pick a major at that young age. . . I never in a million years would have thought I would want to go into nursing at that age. . . but you change, your interests change, and your motivations change as you age and mature. That is why there are so many of us now going back to school in our 30s, 40s, even 50s and maybe 60s! We ROCK!

Hey Sandy good for you!:yeah:

I too have decided to become a nurse.

People like you give us younger ones hope that we can always continue on with our dreams no matter what life throws at you.

Thanks! Good luck, BTW: I'm just taking my pre-reqs (I'm a Pharmacy Tech CPhT) but hope to be RN with BSN :rcgtku:
