41 and going into NURSING? HELP

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi everyone!

First off my name is sandy and i Live in Akron ohio with my hubby and my children...

All my life I have always wanted to be a nurse and I think I finally have a GREAT chance of a lifetime to go to school and become a wonderful nurse. BUT at the same time im really nervous and wondering if I can even do it... Im 41 years old... that means I would be 44 before i would even graduate.. UHGGGGGG Its been a LONG time since i have been in school also. I did do a medical Assistant course back in 93 and passed it fine.. BUT well ya know.. this is totally different...

The last test to be given is on Jan 23rd. SO i have ordered a few study guides to help me (hopefully) make it thru the entrance test... Any other great ideas? ESP in Math and Science.. YIKES

Just wanted to stop by and introduce myself and hopefully i will be around more often...

People like you give us younger ones hope that we can always continue on with our dreams no matter what life throws at you.

AMEN!

As a younger student, I find myself trying to sit near the older students in my classes because they always seem to know what direction their headed in and how to get there. They also wont likely be yaking away to their buddies or click clacking on their phones the entire class period, which drives me nuts.

I am 49 and getting ready for my 2nd term. I found I had to study a little harder than the younger ones. B+ was my lowest grade. WE ALL CAN DO IT.

Congrats! I think you're making a great choice!

I have a family member who is thinking of getting into nursing and she's around your age too :))

I think it's great what you're doing and i dont think you should feel at all discouraged. You're a young woman who has a dream and no doubt should go after it and follow it! Don't let something like age make you feel that you can't do something. That's what i tell my family member too. I know someone who's in their 50's that wants to become an rn and i told her to go for it too. It's never too late in life to do something good for yourself. You don't stop living or eating at 40, so go for it, and best of luck!:redbeathe

Hi,

Hang in there you will do fine. I to have decided to go back to school after many moons. I find that because of my age school is so much more interesting. I remember sitting in A @ P class in amazement of how wonderful the human body is. When I was younger I didn't appreciate what I was learning, now things are much different because I am older and much more mature. You look at things differently now and that helps a lot. With faith in God, knowledge, and compassion for human life there is no way you won't make it.

Sandy,

Don't freak....I'm 40 and have been taking pre-reqs only since this summer. You will do just fine. It's funny us non-traditional students tend to worry about being able to cut it, but I think we tend to want it a lot and feel it's our last chance.....you'll do just fine.

I am 42 and in my 4th semester of pre-reqs. You can do it! I was terrified at first but I find my age is definately a benefit. I am married, I have a home and a family, so I am at school to learn and not play. The NET for me was on the easier side. Review the books you purchased and you should be fine.

Good luck!!

Well, as a younger adult I can reassure you on this end that there are plenty of people in the programs who are in their 30s, 40s, and 50s. When I went to my university there was a guy who was over 60 in one of my classes (non-nursing) who was going back for a career change. We actually collaborated on projects and hit it off well. I for one find the older students to be more in-line with the way I think and enjoy classes with them moreso than the 20 year olds. I worry about my YOUNGER age 23, going back for nursing. By the time I start I will be 24 then 25 when I finish. Then I want to start an APN program-PhD OR medical school. Either way I have another 10 or so years left. I already regret not being able to spend the time with my children that I would have if I delayed my education. In some ways it is BETTER to go back later...at least in my opinion.

As a more mature student your life skills will be very useful in nursing. You might not learn as quickly as you once did, but your dedication and determination to succeed will get you through.

Fear not! I am 55 and will be 56 in May when I finish with my RN. You will do great!!!!!!!! Good luck to you.:yeah:

I am 37, will be 38 this year. Doing the same thing.

I am not scared of school, but scared of having the kids, work, the house, and all the other things....and THEN, apply for the program and not get in due to the lottery.
