Going to the Gym

Published

I decided to sign up for the gym. It wasn't for a new years resolution to loose weight; instead, it was for a source of stress relief for me. Sure, if I loose weight it would be great, but I wanted to know if anyone else has signed up for the gym as a source of stress releif from nursing school? I was told during orientation that we have to learn to take care of ourselves so we don't burn out or get over stressed and I figured that exercising would be a great outlet.

DOnt do the gym but my bike has seen miles of punishment from school so far. Nothing beats just getting out, setting a good cadence and pedaling til your lungs burn. Ah I miss warm weather.

Biking it out is great too. I used to ride my bike alot. Now I dont. I have a bunch of workout equipment at home, but I can not get the same intensity that I do at the gym. Mind freak kinda thing. My triceps are burning right now because of the dips and presses I did today.

I'm so strongly for keeping myself healthy especially when you're in school! I religiously went to the gym at least 3 times a week after my first semester in school and it helped me a lot in controlling my stress and my body didn't feel so sluggish in compared to when I didn't work out during my first semester in nursing school. Thumbs up  for exercising!!

My problem is it kills me to just stay indoors with no change of scenery. I used to live in CO and man, the biking there was just insane. Ups, downs, flats, INSANE downs oh how i miss it. Out here though now, i've worked on my endurance and sprints. Ok Im real ready to go now. I hate that its below zero ha ha

I too joined the gym last week. My first semester of nursing school was a killer...and I am a "stress-eater"....so I decided that this semester, I would exercise the stress away instead of eat it up. I've lost 4 1/2 lbs. in one week!!! Anyway, I agree, I am doing it more for the stress relief than anything...the weight loss is just an added bonus. Good luck, and keep it up!!!

I am a kickboxing, weightliftin', hip hop dancing queen! Talk about stress relief. I kinda went into working out backwards. I joined after nursing school finished last month and I started working more (so I could afford the outrageous cost of our healthclub/spa/child care center/water resort, vacation 5 miels down the street)

I am studying for State Boards, I have my flashcard notes on the console of the treadmill and I am studying like a champ. I am getting a workout physically and mentally. Just last night I did 30 minutes on the treadmill and it flew by while I did 50 NCLEX questions. Safety first, make sure you put the safety cord on just incase you lose your step (like I did....:clown:)

Good for you! That is the one thing I refuse to give up during nursing school - because I honestly believe it helps me do better than if I took that time & studied. Good for the stress level, good for the brain, and of course good for the body too. It even helps you sleep better. Stick with it, you will never regret it!

The gym is one thing I wont give up during school. I take my books there and read and cycle. Or I will record a lecture/study guide on my ipod and run and listen. I gained weight when I first started school thanks to stress, but the weight gain affected how I felt which affected me in class. Thats why I wont give up the gym and now I lost the weight I gained plus a couple of pounds!

I am REALLY hoping that I will be able to stick with a workout routine when school starts...I may have to spend less time online (ha!). My goal is to do Callanetics or something like it 3-4 days a week, and run or bike on my 3-day weekend. Exercise definitely makes me feel less sluggish, I sleep better, wake up more easily and overall have more energy and zip! Oh...and the size small scrub pants I purchased will continue to fit!!!

It's easy, though, to get into the "I have to study" mode..but I agree with Kelly. You have to exercise your body if you're going to exercise your mind!

Good luck!!!

It's definitely something I'm concerned about, as I used to get a lot of exercise by biking to school (10 miles each way, 2-4 times a week). Now that I've switched to a different school, it's not such a great option anymore! At the moment, my main exercise is walking the dog, which isn't nearly enough, and I don't even get to that every day.

I'm very tempted to join a gym, and may do so in a month or two if finances allow. One of the local gyms offers free childcare, which my son really enjoys (he's been there with a friend), so it could actually be a family activity.

I'm also going to start taking fencing classes with my son. Since I'll be taking him to that anyways, I may as well get some exercise myself!
