I decided to sign up for the gym. It wasn't for a new years resolution to loose weight; instead, it was for a source of stress relief for me. Sure, if I loose weight it would be great, but I wanted to know if anyone else has signed up for the gym as a source of stress releif from nursing school? I was told during orientation that we have to learn to take care of ourselves so we don't burn out or get over stressed and I figured that exercising would be a great outlet.

I gave it up because it was an extra expensive my husband and I didn't feel was "necessary" ... Well after gaining almost 10 lbs my first semester LOL, it was my xmas present to sign up for a years membership!! I've been going religiously again every day since and it feels sooo good!! I truly think I will do better this semester because I will have the source of stress relief that I did not have before! I also multitask and study while doing my cardio!!
Okay, y'all have inspired me! I have been looking at the info on our school gym, which I have never used before. I have at least one chunk of time during each day between classes where I can go to the gym and do cardio for at least 30 minutes. I have a digital recorder so I can record my lectures and put them on my IPod to listen to while I work out. I just figured I wouldn't bother trying to work out during nursing school, but I know my stress levels and health would be better off if I did. And I could fit my jeans a little better, too:). I also didn't want to leave my kids at daycare all day, only to pick them up and take them to another daycare (my family has a membership at the YMCA), but if I use the school facilities, I can go while they're already in daycare, and put to use a large amount of time that I would use for studying, anyway. Then at home, I can use my study breaks to do some yoga, pilates moves or lift weights.
I think we should try to keep this thread going, to keep each other motivated, and maybe inspire some others, as well.
Well, I didn't go to the gym the first week of school because I was still recovering from a resp. infection and didn't want to overdo it, but I went ahead and paid for my membership so that I would be "motivated" to start the next week. I went four days last week, which is good considering that I haven't worked out consistently in about three years. I'm just walking on the treadmill right now. I listen to my nursing lectures, which is helpful.
I also have to watch a ton of videos and do some online curriculum stuff in which we have to spend a certain amount of time on, even if we finish in 15 minutes, so I use that time to lift some weights, do leg lifts, etc. So far, so good! I already feel better, even when I stay up late to study.
Thanks again!
How do you find time to squeeze the gym into your schedule? I'd love to go to the gym but between working full time, school, wife, and three children I just cannot fit the gym into my schedule.
I have thought about trying the Wii Fit just to keep the blood flowing but I just haven't gootten to it yet.
Well, as stated in my other post, I made myself take a PE class so that I had to do it at least twice a week. I also use it as my study time. I record my lectures and while I'm exercising, I listen to them and think about the material. I also go in between classes if we have an hour or more wait and do what I can.
If you can't find time to go to the gym because of other obligations, you could invest in some weights and lift those at home when you have down time. During the summer when I'm not going to our campus every day, I do laps around our house and do crunches and sit ups.
My sister has a wii fit and she loves it. It keeps track of your weight and shows you your bmi and all that fun jazz. She works full time too and she doesn't get alot of down time and she says its worth the money.
Better to have some exercise than none. It makes ya feel good :).
If I go to the gym at least 3 times a week during school, I feel good about myself. That was my motto during prereqs, and it's my motto in nursing school too! It really does make a difference. Some of my classmates are like, "WHERE do you find the time??" but my gym is about a block away from campus, so I pack my gym bag, and depending on when class gets out, I take a spinning/kickboxing/lift class, or I do 30 minutes on the treadmill and some abs. I'm not going to come out of nursing school looking like a fitness model, but I at least know I'll feel good! Does wonders for those days of pharm overstimulation too! :)

I have always used working out as my stress relief, and relied heavily on it thus far in nursing school. It helped me to add in some work out days outside in the fresh air & sunshine also! A little bonus, me & this guy from my original 10 people in clinical (the only one's that work out regularly) are the only ones that haven't gained weight! Also, I use a digital recorder to read my notes into and save them to my ipod so that I can go running and still review!
