Going back to nursing school after accounting degree

Published

Hey guys,

So I'm just curious to see if there is anybody out there like me. I will graduate in December with a degree in Accounting, but right now I am trying to get into the nursing program at my school to start next spring. I just took the TEAS V (and got an 82.7% yay!) and I'm enrolled in an 8 week anatomy course that begins next week.

I have never liked accounting, I just picked it because I thought it would be easy and I would be able to graduate quickly. Recently however, I guess because graduation was approaching, I realized that I didn't want to do this for the rest of my life. I always wanted to be a nurse but I thought the classes would be too hard and I wouldn't be able to do it. Now that I've almost completed one degree I realize that I can do anything I set my mind to and I'm not quite as nervous.

Has anyone gone back to nursing school after obtaining one degree? Was it hard to keep a job while in the program? Are you glad you made the choice to pursue a nursing degree?

Have you researched the job market in your area?

I have a degree in hospitality management. I enjoyed it. When I started back in school with pre-reqs. It's an adjustment going from the businesses to the sciences but I feel like a am more in my element

We call this "second degree nurses". It is not uncommon at all. I think you'll find that many schools have programs designed specifically for people such as yourself.

Best wishes on your nursing education journey.

This is so, so common. I have a BA in English and am just wrapping up my prereqs and applying to nursing schools. There are many, many post-bac students at my community college, and many, many of us want to be nurses. You will meet a lot of classmates in the same boat before and during nursing school.

I think the transition between now and nursing school will not be a big obstacle for you since you are already obtaining a degree and have gone through the studies and workload. You'll be prepared for the workload and courses for nursing school. There are a lot of people who go back years later and get their second degree in nursing. Sometimes we're all not cut out for just doing one career in our lifetime. Some of us have a calling for multiple careers, and that's okay! Good luck with nursing school.

I received my first degree in biology, but the focus was conservation. 14 years later, I'm back at school pursing my nursing degree. I go to school full time and work full time. I schedule my days for optimal efficiency in regards to scholastic responsibilities and work. I was initially afraid because of the time away from school and feeling as if I will have to catch up with those in the pre-nursing program who have just graduated from high school. But I am doing well. I feel that you know what will be expected of you school wise and you can make it work if your driven to success! My only challenge is trying to work in a healthy eating and exercise plan for myself:sneaky: . I am glad I am in school for nursing, it is falling into place, and in my life I've had some pretty random experiences from living in a desert African village teaching about HIV, living/working in a monastery in the U.S. to herding cows in Ireland, no matter how bizarre those experiences were, they've somehow help me in my schooling in odd ways! I feel I will be able to relate to a wide range of individuals and it makes me excited to help those in need as a nurse. Best of luck to you!!
