  1. Pre-Reqs Plan!

I took my time with prereqs - it took my 3.5 years to complete them. It made it far easier to get a 4.0, after which I had no problem getting accepted to my first-choice nursing school. Slow and steady can win the race.
  2. Tips for Specialty

My school is really, really pushing us to do externships because it is much easier to get into high-demand specialties having done them. That said, ANY additional health care experience can get your foot in the door - volunteer, CNA , EMT, etc.
  3. Accelerated BSN or Entry level MSN?

I'm currently in a BSN/MSN and personally would not feel comfortable going into direct practice at the MSN level! I have until five years after graduation to complete my MSN, should I choose to do so, and I will most likely take a year or two off fir...
  4. Curious About Drop-out Rate In Nursing School

Just finished my sixth week; out of my original class of 165, 5 students have already dropped out. I assume this will continue as the program gets more intense, especially since a passing grade is a 77 and the instructors have said that they will mak...
  5. Why is nursing school "hard?"

I have just finished my sixth week of a BSN program; I can't comment on clinicals because I don't start those until another week, but for me the schooling has been exhausting because I'm an introvert (INTJ) and the labs are HIGHLY social and involve ...
  6. math tests?

Med math is incorporated into my pharmacology course, but whether your school does it that way or as a separate course, it is unavoidable for all the aforementioned reasons of patient safety. Also, stats is useful because it teaches you how to tell i...
  7. NR302 Health Assessment HELP!

    1) REVIEW THE POWERPOINTS STAT! 2) Watch videos of the health assessments. They might come as supplemental materials with your textbooks, but if not search for them online. There are a lot of them out there. 3) Take better notes. If you can't do this...
  8. Wow, I really have to take this class?

I had to take English 102, a class on how to write a research paper, in order to qualify for the nursing program at the community college at which I took my prereqs...and I have a BA in English with a history minor, worked as a writing tutor for thre...
  9. Loneliness and the First-Year Nontraditional Student

I commute to school via public transportation and have yet to meet anyone from my neighborhood in my program. A lot of the younger students live on campus or commute together. My close friends are not in nursing school or the city where I live, which...
  10. How do you know this is what you want to do?

I'd only done office work prior to nursing school, and I HATE HATE HATED it. I wanted the polar opposite - to not be sitting at a desk all day shuffling papers while rarely interacting with other people.
  11. Getting through nursing school with mental health problems

I have type 1 bipolar disorder and just started nursing school. I registered with my university's disabilities office, and keep to my weekly therapy and monthly med management appointments to keep myself afloat. I also try to maintain a regular sleep...
  12. A&P... is it really this bad??

IMO, Chem 2 was more of a weeder class than A&P, which gives you legit knowledge you will use all the time in nursing school. It is true that a lot of people drop or do poorly in A&P, though, and end up having a hard time getting into nursing...
  13. How: Health Ins, work, school???

I'm on Medicaid for the purposes of nursing school...was told I was eligible for it when I tried to buy an Obamacare policy. FYI, you can apply for Medicaid year-round, not just during the Affordable Care Act open enrollment period that starts in Nov...
  14. Am I Just Not Smart Enough?

Almost everyone in my BSN program had AT LEAST a 3.75 or above, even though the stated minimum GPA for prereqs was a 3.0. Also, they regarded Cs, Ds, Fs, and Ws all as failing grades. Getting a C in General Bio looks REALLY bad...it's much easier tha...
  15. Keep mouth shut? A & P 2

I hate to break it to you, but MOST of your exam questions in nursing school will have more than one plausible answer, and you will have to pick the most pertinent choice by using critical thinking skills that require you not to just memorize, but to...
