Give 'Em Enough Rope

Edgar Cayce said "You can't someone into more trouble than they can get themselves into".

I've found multiple times in my career, and personal life, for this belief to ring true. Recently, a house sup and tech were discussing patients by name in the earshot of a visitor. I alerted them to what they were doing and more or less went about my business.

I heard through the grapevine the tech was terminated this past week for document falsification.

Now, I had no ill feelings toward this tech, not ever working with him much, but knew him to be baically a nice guy who did his job as far as I knew. However, I sensed he did not have good boundaries, in that he didn't seem to take some things seriously.

I have other examples that I may get into.

Have you ever experienced a situation where, metaphorically, enough rope was given that the individual hung themselves?

I wondered that, but Davey said this was basically a nice guy who did his job well. Clark doesn't fit that description.

It's obvious to me that TriciaJ will not be getting this award any time soon!

So you're saying that BTDT does get that award and I don't even get a participation trophy?

At one place I worked, we had a CNA who some of the residents said was "mean" to them. She wasn't physically abusive, they said, but she called them names and spoke to them harshly. I wrote her up a couple of times for the accusations and the DON counseled her, but we could never catch her in the act...until one night when she totally lost it and yelled at one resident so loud we could hear her down the hall, calling him "ugly" and "slow" and pushing him down to the dining room in his W/C so fast he almost tumbled out. Like a previous poster, I took particular delight in sending this girl home and phoning the DON to tell her what I had done. I think everyone was glad when she was fired the next day.

I used to think you were, like, the BEST PERSON EVER. Now I know you're evil like everyone else I've ever encountered in my entire life.

I knew a nurse that would show up for the 7p-7a shift, in the beginning about 15 minutes late. 15 minutes turned into 30 minutes, 30 minutes turned into an hour, 1 hour turned into 2 hours, 2 hours turned into 4 hours, until one day he just didn't show up. Then he didn't show up another shift on another day. I was mad at this point, not because he was late but because he didn't show up. He rarely did his work when he was at work but I was mad because he stole my cardiac stethoscope and I knew I would never get it back. It was partly my fault because I left it on my cart before I left work, but I called work and he said he had it. He said he would give it back when he saw me again which was suppose to be in the next 4 days. Well I learned my lesson. Late people can easily turn into thieves. My dad always said if you will lie, you will steal, and if you steal you will kill. Maybe my dad should have said if you will be late, you will steal and if you will steal...well you get the point of what I am trying to say.

I guess, TriciaJ, that's why the allnurses administrators bestowed upon me this award:

Your Dad's wise belief is based in reality, Workitinfava, in Newton's first law of motion: Something will remain in motion unless acted upon by an opposing force.

People will continue their behavior as long as as resistance is not met. As long as people do not have to deal with the ramifications of their actions they will continue their behavior.

Most prudent people with an ounce of insight will change their behavior when shown the error of their ways. There are theories as to why some do not change their ways when they meet with obvious obstacles in life, one being the Piepers' theory of "Addicted to Unhappiness".

Typically, in metaphorically giving an individual enough rope to hang themselves, the individual's untethered behavior continues until they receive their karmic comeupins and are no longer allowed an arena in which to practice their inappropriate acts. Hence, give 'em enough rope and they will hang themselves.

One such example where I used Edgar Cayce's belief along with the Chinese I Ching philosophies of the "Keeping Still Mountain" along with "It Furthers One to Cross the Great Water" was with a tech we called Baby Huey.

Baby Huey had an orificenal of supporters in that his Mom was a tenured tech and one of his drinking buddies was an administrator. When I confronted Baby Huey on his insubordination and informed him that it was to be reported unless he did as I instructed, he replied, "I don't care".

To make a very long story short, I found that documentation(s) to said administrator/drinking buddy availed nothing. My actions could be interpreted as the I Ching "It Further's One to Cross the Great Water". Once I had done all I could do, I followed the I Ching's "Keeping Still Mountain" and sat back and waited.

In the end, Baby Huey was caught on video monitoring acting inappropriately with a patient and was subsequently terminated. His Mom was also terminated sometime later for approximately the same reason. And as for the administrator/drinking buddy, she quit her position sometime in between the two.

In essence, they all were given enough rope to hang themselves.

It amazes me though how much rope it can take before said hanging actually happens. Some people I've worked with have been let go at a single infraction being hung with a rope from a very short tree. I've also worked with some epic screw ups that could have jumped from the top of empire state building and still had rope to spare.

And sometimes there seems to be no rhyme or reason to who they will or won't fire.

Well, there is that...

Eleanor, my work wife, and I were discussing WRMC's practices just the other night. She brought up a very pleasant hard-working LPN who, years ago, was terminated for false documentation. Nurse M has had complaints about her behavior waged against her by a few employees, has falsified the same forms twice that the LPN did, and has been called on the carpet a couple of times in HR but she lingers on like the bad smell of C-diff.

I don't get it.

She's obviously buds with someone. Like they say, behind every terrible employee is some sort of nepotistic connection. I have another saying, but it would violate T.O.S.
