I have been a GI nurse in a ambulatory facility for 3 years. I am getting bored with my job and I am thinking about moving on to something else. Before having this job, I have only worked on the med/surg floor for about 3 months and I couldn't stand it.
I actually want to get a second job on Sat as a Perdiem/PRN nurse in a rehab center or med/surg floor so that I can get more med/surg experience. I feel like I am losing my skills. I am only good at GI stuff and doing IVs.... I feel like I am wasting my license.
Can someone give me some suggestions of what specialties I can possibly get into? And can someone share his or her experience with me if you have any on changing specialties? I tried to apply for some med/surg jobs but I got no call from the hospitals. Is my License useless now????? I am a little depress over this.:zzzzz Please help.
By the way, I am an older nurse and I do need some encouragement. I don't want to go back to an intership and make minimun wages....

Perhaps you could call some local hospital nursing recruiters and explain your situation. And like the other poster stated, I would apply to as many jobs as possible.

28 is older ? Wow ! I am ancient!
Don't be discouraged there are opportunities out there, Someone with good advise will be along to help you. meantime...
What about contacts you have made in the past, drs or other nurses who know you? What about going to job fairs for nurses or a career counselor. sometimes staffing agencies can get you in the door. My son is a nurse too and has been crossed trained by an agency so he can work in a bunch of different hospitals in our area. It is an opportunity to see whats out there and get in the door which is hard for lvns in Tx.
Good Luck!!!
