Hey guys, I was just wonderin, since I'm realtively new here, who you guys are, and what made you choose nursing, and what you guys do to pass time and relieve stress while in school?
Let me start, My name is Mike, I'm 20 and from Ohio, fresh outta highschool I chose engineering, following my dads steps, except for mechanical, I chose software. I attended about a semester of the program, before I realized that it just wasn't right for me, I've always been drawn to the hospital, but I knew absolutely nothing about it. Well in May I had an accident while training for an MMA fight (ufc style fighting) and I spent sometime in the hospital, where I had the coolest nurse take care of me, before that I was always like "me a nurse? yeah right" but I politely asked him about his job, and the schooling, and he gave me a paper to fill out and allowed me too shadow him, after two days I was hooked. After I recovered and regained mobility in my shoulder and knee, I enrolled for my pre reqs, applied to nursing school, and haven't looked back since. I'll never forget the look on my parents face when I told them what I did (I kinda flew under the radar with the whole process) my mom was in tears she was so happy. All my friends are still tryin to find themselvs, while me never being a big fan of highschool, I absolutely love every moment of this, even the pre-req portion (cept math lol) when I'm not at school, I wake up at 3am, and work at McDonald's till 1...but that has to stop this coming fall, studying is more important, and I know it's going to be a real hard semester. I like to golf, I went to states in Highschool for golf +3 handicap, I love MMA fighting, playing guitar, and lifting.
I think it would be interesting to get some replies please?
Thanks,
Irwin
Hi all,
I'm Dan. An old guy at 54. Worked 28 years as a chemist to pay the bills, but my real love was the 15-25 hours/week I spent as a volunteer paramedic for the last 25 years. When I got laid off some months back I asked myself what I really enjoy, and it always came back to taking care of sick people. I'd been thinking of nursing for years, but it's hard to leave a good salary and benefits. So now that my former company gave me a kick in the butt, I'm starting nursing school in one week. I'm excited because now I feel that I can make a difference in people's lives.
Hello all,
I saw alot of Sailors in here and I thought I should reply. I'm currently a Submarine Sonar Technician in the Navy with six months left. I've been in for 10 years and started at an LVN school when I got to shore duty a few years ago. I just graduated in June and I am awaiting the test results from the NCLEX-PN.
I've always wanted to work in the medical field, but when I had a chance to become a Hospital Corpsman, I turned it down because they mentioned the word "Marines". No offense to the Marines and those 8404's that go out with them defending our country. It just wasn't for me.
Anyway, what got me motivated was a time when I was hospitalized for appendicitis. I realized that nursing was the thing for me, even though I am a man. God bless to all.

Another bubblehead....! What are the odds......?
I too was in the Navy for 10 years (Nuclear Engineer on "boats", and an EMT for the EMAT.), and left when the Navy and I had conflicting opinions on my future. So, I left, taught for the USPS for awhile, and decided to go to skool. I am currently in my second semester at Rose State College. I plan to go to medical school about 8 months after graduation (currently finishing up all my pre-med reqs at the same time). I also work full time (just got on at a hospital as a CNA), and have a pregnant wife, and 2 year old kid, so I don't have much free time. When I do have a spare moment, I enjoy triathalons.
I got busy posting on other topics so I kinda didn't remember all the fellas over here!!
Anyways, I'm a 25 yo from Kankakee, IL(60 min south of chitown), just starting the local community college ASN program. I've always been drawn to the field, my grandmother worked at a catapillar factory for 30+years as an RN, my aunt is a managing nurse at a 500+ Facility, and another aunt is a home care nurse, who kind of I think practices with a very loose license.
A little background about me is that I started off in college with an idea to do radio communications, then switched to accounting for 3 years, and burned out my last year, cause I couldn't see myself interacting with numbers and figures. Mainly had done it cause the gf at the time(future wife planned) had suggested it, I did good, and it stuck....
So, i wound up taking a year off, went out west and drove around in an 1984 volvo station wagon for 9 of said months. Took a lot of back roads, met a lot of :smackingf interesting people...Ahem. Spent a lot of time writing, traveling, seeing sights, drove down US 1/101 (very nice drive, highly suggested sometime in life). Took some survival training in Oregon, just in case the presidency becomes a dictorial curse....
Was sitting in the middle of a forest, surrounded by early morning mist, when it hit me....I enjoy helping people, care is something that radiates from a person's soul and connects us to everyone regardless of status...what could I do in that field?
Doctor....not for me....NURSE!!! And thus my path was started.
I moved to bigger city nearby family and started doing prereqs. Worked 6 months in a DD group home, then spent last 2.5 years doing activity director work with mentally ill adults. Rewarding.
With school starting, my position wouldn't work with it, so I had to resign. So, at the moment, am doing the interview shuffle and living off of loans.
When I have spare moments, I enjoy playing guitar(still learning), and writing performance based poetry. I am a finalist in chicago poetry competition last year and feel like the words can really connect with at least one person(that's all that counts- a lot like patient education!)
Didn't mean to write a book, and should probably get some sleep, but I guess that just goes to show my passion for the field!!
Spent the last 2 years getting all of my pre-reqs done at night while working at my full time (40 to 50 hour work week) job as a welder / fabricator / machinist for a local industrial equipment manufacturer, where I have been for the last 17 years. Just entered the nursing program at my local community college. I am married, love to work with metal, and my hands. Can't get enough of hotrods.
I chose nursing because it is something that I have been interested in since high school (1989, yea, I know I dated myself). Being in the industrial field has had its ups and downs, it has paid the bills, allowed me to go many places and learn many things, but in my opinion it just dosen't offer the security or the range of advancement that I desire. As a nurse, just pick the city you would like to live in and chances are you can find a job that will allow you to provide a good life for you and your family, not to mention the oppourtunity for advancement, it just depends on how much you are willing to invest in your career (read as school). I have always been interested in a science related field, and the nursing field is growing every day. Nurses are professional, intelligent, determined, and respected members of their community. Who wouldn't want to be part of that? I almost feel like me pursuing a nursing career is like being privvy to a huge inside stock tip, I am amazed when I hear of enrollment decline. I feel like everyone would want this. thanks for asking, sorry so long.
Wow, I had no idea that there were so many 20 year olds posting here. No offense to the others, though, it is just reassuring to see some other young ones.
I am a 22 year old guy living in Houston, Texas. Right out of high school I started out at UH doing pre-dental pre-requisites. In my second semester after I took a class about Healthcare professions I started to rethink my decision. I had pretty much decided that I was going to step down to the community college and pursue my ADN when I told my parents. To my suprise they were all for it and excited that I was breaking the mold. My father started looking up all sorts of information online about the profession and I think he was more excited than I was. (his first wife was an RN, and he almost chose to go into the same field)
Well I started at the first community college and within a year had totally failed out. Talk about hard to handle..I was very upset. I decided to get up and apply to a different school. Within the year they accepted me and took all the classes that I had passed, so I started in the 2nd semester. I am now in my OB rotation and am more dedicated than ever. Nursing is the field for me and I actually enjoy the challenge the classes bring. I hope to work in a level 1 trauma center and get to save some lives!
I didnt mean to write a book, but I thought that if anyone was having 2nd thoughts, or a rough time with their classes they might get some reassurance. I think when I failed out my maturity level was not quite where it should be. I was working full-time and not studying like I should have been. [i also met the girl that I am now dating(cardiac nurse)...I think that had something to do with it..lol]
I am an avid surfer and enjoy working out and running. Most of my time is devoted to school, but I work as a Pharmacy Technician about 16 hours a week.
I'm in my last semester of an associates program. I still work fulltime for a US Navy contractor. I deal in airplane parts all day, while I'm not in class or clinical. There are always tons of nursing jobs in the paper, and it sounded pretty interesting, and schedules can kind of be forgiving to go racing.
My brother and I raise cattle, I also race a dragster for a guy, as well as run my own car. The dragster runs 7.80's at 174mph, my car runs 10.40's at 128mph.
Not a bad deal getting to work around a bunch of nice looking ladies. :wink2:
