Getting to know the men behind the names...

Published

Hey guys, I was just wonderin, since I'm realtively new here, who you guys are, and what made you choose nursing, and what you guys do to pass time and relieve stress while in school?

Let me start, My name is Mike, I'm 20 and from Ohio, fresh outta highschool I chose engineering, following my dads steps, except for mechanical, I chose software. I attended about a semester of the program, before I realized that it just wasn't right for me, I've always been drawn to the hospital, but I knew absolutely nothing about it. Well in May I had an accident while training for an MMA fight (ufc style fighting) and I spent sometime in the hospital, where I had the coolest nurse take care of me, before that I was always like "me a nurse? yeah right" but I politely asked him about his job, and the schooling, and he gave me a paper to fill out and allowed me too shadow him, after two days I was hooked. After I recovered and regained mobility in my shoulder and knee, I enrolled for my pre reqs, applied to nursing school, and haven't looked back since. I'll never forget the look on my parents face when I told them what I did (I kinda flew under the radar with the whole process) my mom was in tears she was so happy. All my friends are still tryin to find themselvs, while me never being a big fan of highschool, I absolutely love every moment of this, even the pre-req portion (cept math lol) when I'm not at school, I wake up at 3am, and work at McDonald's till 1...but that has to stop this coming fall, studying is more important, and I know it's going to be a real hard semester. I like to golf, I went to states in Highschool for golf +3 handicap, I love MMA fighting, playing guitar, and lifting.

I think it would be interesting to get some replies please?

Thanks,

Irwin

I was another baby with spina bifida. They flew in a specialist to do surgery on me when I was 3 days old. Afterward, my parents were told I wouldn't live past the age of 2 or so and wouldn't be able to crawl or walk and could have other complications. That was my last surgery - I'm 36 now and able to walk. (Not going to win any awards for grace and agility, but I have almost non-existent issues and realize how lucky I am.)

I first thought about nursing at age 25 when my six-year old niece was diagnosed with neuroblastoma. She was give

Started out in a PCT program in 2003 and last year decided to bite the bullet: left the old career, took a tech job (finally) at the hospital, and started full-time nursing school. I'll be finished in December.

With over 10 cases of cancer in the immediate family, I've always wanted to go into oncology & hospice but now I'm being pulled toward peds/PICU/NICU, so we'll see where I end up.

Good luck to my fellow student nurses!

Congrats to the graduate nursess!

And THANKS to those who've been out there through the years!

jay,31, born and raised in tampa,fl...now in sc.

unlike most of you, i did not have an "experience" with a nurse. instead, while in the army, i read a book by echo heron, rn. at that moment, i knew i wanted to be a nurse, but life kept me sidetracked until about 2 1/2 years ago when i began my path to nursing. i will graduate may 2007 and look forward to it.

nursing has everything that i could ask for...professionalism, good pay, ability to make a difference everyday, ability to advance and continue my education.

that's me,

jay

I hear ya, man. And that's a good story about your niece. Even today, neuroblastoma can carry a pretty dismal prognosis.

Nice post Irwin. I blog on this site and I've got 25,000 posts. I'm an RN to BSN student. No need for me to run my mouth any further. Good luck to you!

This is pretty cool...and not to be off topic or anything, but I know I'm personally think it's great that so many men have decided to choose nursing as a career.

And working with nurses for as long as I have, seeing the way they can be taken advantage of, I think it's doubly excellent to get some "testicles" in the field.

Nice to meet you all.

Amen to that!!!!!

There are alot of Bukeyes in here. I grew up in East Liverpool, Ohio

I'm David and I live in Birmingham, AL. I'm 24 and intended to go to medical school. After not getting in I started working at the hospital and realized that MD's don't associate with patients as much as I would like. I started finishing up the pre-reqs and will start in less than a month at UAB.

I'm a little older at 39. Did 7 yrs in the Navy as an Electronics Technician, then completed a BS in Medical Technology in '95. Have worked as a lab tech ever since.

Decided I wanted more pt contact, so entered PN school this year and will graduate that in Dec.

Will go right on to ASN then BSN as I want to go into the Army Nurse Corps.

I live in Indiana.

Try starting at 49. Ok, 48, but I turn 49 right after the 2nd Degree/Accelerated BSN program starts this August.

USMC for six years (three years as a Marine Security Guard, standing post at US Embassies), then 15 years as a tax accountant in both the private sector and the federal government. Now I'm going to be doing something real. Man, this is exciting.

Specializes in Neonatal ICU (Cardiothoracic).

Hi all,

Unfortunately I've been posting on the other forums so much I kinda forgot about this one. I really like this one though.... It's cool to see the struggles and victories I lived through in school played out in all your experiences. Well, I'm now 23 years old, out of NS since May of 2005. I originally wanted to do physical therapy, but changed my mind and major after two days of college. SO I didn't look back and bit the bullet. 4 years and a gastric ulcer named Tony later, I graduated. I snagged an awesome job in the Neonatal ICU, and have loved every minute of it. I've gotten to resuscitate dozens of preemies in the delivery room, care for babies as small as 14 oz, learn the awesome technology specific to NICU, and even enjoyed the "girly" jobs like teaching a baby to eat from a bottle after being on a vent for months. In order to decide what to pursue as a masters degree, I'm switching to my hospital's level I 80-bed trauma ER. Er is the only other field that has really interested me, so I figure I'll try it out, then either stay there, or go back to NICU fulltime while working on my neonatal NP. I still love "my" babies, though. I'm still going to work in the NICU prn while in the ED. NICU has really helped me develop my future fathering skills. I've been able to be "dad" to a lot of my babies in NICU. I've threatened to steal a baby or two that I really got attached to! Anyway, you'll be hearing more from me!

Enjoy your summer!
