Getting to know the men behind the names...

Published

Hey guys, I was just wonderin, since I'm realtively new here, who you guys are, and what made you choose nursing, and what you guys do to pass time and relieve stress while in school?

Let me start, My name is Mike, I'm 20 and from Ohio, fresh outta highschool I chose engineering, following my dads steps, except for mechanical, I chose software. I attended about a semester of the program, before I realized that it just wasn't right for me, I've always been drawn to the hospital, but I knew absolutely nothing about it. Well in May I had an accident while training for an MMA fight (ufc style fighting) and I spent sometime in the hospital, where I had the coolest nurse take care of me, before that I was always like "me a nurse? yeah right" but I politely asked him about his job, and the schooling, and he gave me a paper to fill out and allowed me too shadow him, after two days I was hooked. After I recovered and regained mobility in my shoulder and knee, I enrolled for my pre reqs, applied to nursing school, and haven't looked back since. I'll never forget the look on my parents face when I told them what I did (I kinda flew under the radar with the whole process) my mom was in tears she was so happy. All my friends are still tryin to find themselvs, while me never being a big fan of highschool, I absolutely love every moment of this, even the pre-req portion (cept math lol) when I'm not at school, I wake up at 3am, and work at McDonald's till 1...but that has to stop this coming fall, studying is more important, and I know it's going to be a real hard semester. I like to golf, I went to states in Highschool for golf +3 handicap, I love MMA fighting, playing guitar, and lifting.

I think it would be interesting to get some replies please?

Thanks,

Irwin

Specializes in Cardiovascular Disease.

Hi all, I'm one of the older guys too. I'm 32 and I'm in an MSN "bridge" program at Vanderbilt University. I spent 5 years in the Army as a combat medic. I've always known I wanted to go into medicine but didn't heed that call right out of my Bachelor's program. I became a high school teacher for 5 years. When I got tired of the crap with teaching unappreciative rich kids I decided to go back. I work in an E.R. that's a level 1 trauma center part-time and go to school full-time. I'm specializing in Adult Cardiovascular Disease. I finish as an Adult Nurse Practitioner with an MSN. I have a year and a half to go and I love school. For once I look forward to going to school.

21 y/o nursing student here. Was going to be a radiology tech straight out of high school, but decided that I wanted to be more involved in the whole process. I also started working at a level 1 trauma center as a registrar, and found the nurses' roles there much more interesting. ER is what really interests me, and is what I will be doing after I graduate. OR and cath lab are also very interesting to me. My long-term goal is to become a nurse practitioner and return home to a rural area. I'd like to work in rural hospital ERs in this capacity.

hey there! i am 24 y o and nursing is my second course, i am a biology graduate and i find difficult on searching a stable job with this profession, thats why im trying to luck as a nurse, i hope i can get through it! Good luck to all of us!!! Hope to hear you here all soon!!! God Speed! :)

Hey all. I am 40 years old. From Ohio. Married to my high school sweet heart for twenty years now. Have three kids (17, 15, 13). Retired US Air Force (20 years 5 months 3 days 5 hours 26 minutes). Currently working as a satellite system engineer. Have had it with space and am currently working on getting into nursing school.

I'm 19, finishing up my last semster of pre-reqs. I was (kinda am) pre-med wanted to be a neonatologist, but I am more happy here in nursing less stressful, not AS competive, and I plan on getting my NNP. Like many others, I was drawn to the medical field. I was born with a birth defect, coarcation of the aorta, but it was never found, until I was 15, since then I've had 2 open heart surgeries, but I am finally happy where I am!!!

Hi everyone I'm 31 and applying to nursing school for spring 07. I worked in the corp world for 11 yrs after leaving the Air Force (I was a firefighter) and got sick of it. I became an EMT and found I have a talent for it, my goal, because of being an EMT, is to be a flight nurse. I like being the first person to contact the PT, and I like making my own decisions about how to best care for, or hold together, my PT. I love school and can't wait to start the nursing program.

Specializes in long term care (LTC).

I'm 24, I have a bachelor's in graphic design, worked a couple design jobs until I realized I coudn't see myself doing this for the rest of my life. Not to mention it's a very competitive job industry where jobs are scarce, pay is not stable, and there is no promise of any kind of 'security'. During those times sitting in my cubicle I contemplated nursing, what the benefits of working there were, and to really decide if it was for me.

I just barely started the weekend LVN program, I'm going to clinicals now, and I hope to start work soon as a CNA when I take the state test. My friends are a little upset because I've always been artistically inclined and talented and would rather see me keep my career, but job security is priority #1 for me at the moment. Nursing will provide this, and I'm dedicated to become what I need to be in order to do my job well and effectively. I was the first out of all my friends to get a degree, most of whom are still trying to ''find themselves'', some of which I've convinced to take a look into the world of healthcare.

Parents were absolutely thrilled, especially my mom whose a 30 yr veteran of nursing (ICU RN,supervisor).

Hi, I am Howard (28 yrs old). I graduated with a BS in Finance. Also gained an associates in networking specialists at the same time from a technical school. I decided I hated banking and the borkerage firm I interned at generally gave me a disgusted feeling for that aspect of finances from what I saw. I had gotten a job running a IT network for a accounting firm in the mean time to help pay for my tuition and while was finishing up my BS degree. Well after figuring out what direction in life (one that was more rewarding than just financially) I truely wanted to take thanks to a few good friends that worked in various aspects of medical field. I applied for the Accelerated BSN-RN program at my local university and haven't looked back. I am finishing up my sciences this March and will hear from the nursing board about my acceptance into the program this month. So just in the hold pattern untill then. The counselor says I have a good a chance GPA wise as anyone but still keeping my fingers crossed. My grandmother was also a RN. Excited about this new journey but after reading some of the horror stories in the other forums just have to focus on the positive and be confidence in your choice is the way I view it.

Howard
