What clinched the job for me (so I was told) was that I was willing to go anywhere (Home Health).
Previous RN applicants with more experience would not go to the South Side of Chicago.
I told them I would go anywhere EXCEPT Indiana and Wisconsin..... Because I did not currently have a license to practice there.
They laughed. I got the job.
As for orientation: I had a two DAY orientation (short days too) UNPAID. The ride-alongs I was supposed to be part of never happened. I just dove in and began to swim.
Honestly I did not agree to anything that I did not know going into the job. I knew I was going to have to work weekends, I knew I was going to have to work 3-11/11-7, I knew I was going to have to work holidays. It always amazes me that people working in healthcare think they will start out on a 6-2, m-f job with holidays off.
What did I say during my interview that got me hired... Most likely this " I never blame the patient for their actions, but the disease" working psych this is an important concept. And yes I live it. Joe may have thrown a chair at me last night, but that does not mean I will treat joe any different today ( though I do make the patient approach me first if we have had an altercation)

We all know the job market is TIGHT! So, we all put our best foot forward when we go for that all important interview. Working weekends? Yep, I can do that. Work night? Yep, I can do that? Only a 2 week orientation? Yep, I can do that. So, what have you agreed to in order to get the job offer? What have you regretted?
