to get hired as a new grad...gpa requirements?

My journey to get through nursing school has been a long one.. there were several semesters where I failed classes simply because I didn't withdraw (severe home issues over the past several years that have been resolved.) Most of the classes I have retaken and passed. I've never failed a nursing class. In the hospital I want to work they "prefer" (according to the internship application) a GPA of at least 3.0. Because of those classes my GPA may be in the 2.7 range when I graduate. I'm concerned about it.. whats your take/experience? My first choice is ER nursing...

I have never heard of any place asking about and hiring based on GPA. Is this standard in the nursing workforce, should we newbies expect this?

From my understanding, hospitals never look at your GPA. As long as you pass your NCLEX, your good to go.

Theres a hospital where I live that also asks for a 3.0 gpa for new grads. I was told its because of the high number of new grad applicants it gets and the fact that its the only real childrens hospital in the area right now. It may not be the norm, but some do look at GPA.

I know some applications asked me. I wasn't worried about my GPA..but at the same time I wondered if they even have a way to check? Can they ask for transcripts? If you pass NCLEX they check your lisence...not your grade. There are A students who have trouble passing NCLEX....so the GPA shouldn't matter.

My work asked for my transcripts...

I recently graduated and was hired without ever being asked my GPA. However, my friend was applying for hospitals in Houston, Dallas, etc. (Bigger cities) and some of them had a minimum GPA requirement to even apply.

I interviewed for two floors at one hospital and three floors at another (five interviews basically). One of them asked about my GPA. It was nice that it was in the interview though instead of a fill in the blank on an application, it allowed me to explain myself a little bit. When I first went to college I had a real rough time and my grades definitely showed it, but as things progressed I got it together and had good grades, but my GPA never fully recovered, so I was able to explain that my GPA was xxx, but my GPA for nursing classes was xxx, which was much better.

Same here...the pediatric facility where I currently work as a tech, for nursing new grads (which I will be May 08) they do require a 3.0 GPA. This is required to participate in a residency program which ALL NEW GRADS must go through to be hired. I honestly don't know why this is the case, but I am thinking along the same lines of what Trainer2070 stated above.

Good luck!

I've never heard of anyone being asked for their GPA or transcripts. Apply anyways, and who knows, maybe the manager doesn't even care despite what the application says. If the hospital close to you insists upon asking for your transcripts, apply elsewhere......theres lotsof new grad programs out there.
