"You are wasting my time" I was a new LPN in a snf and was just calling to inform her that a hospice patient she has suggested be sent out to the hospital for an deep, breeding laceration following a fall, was not going to go since the bleeding was stopping I was able to apply steri-strips and the family&hospice nurse had decided against it. It doesn't sound so bad but as a new nurse it was a serious blow...

I'm sure there's worse, but one comes to mind...

Pt. crashing, multiple issues, K+ was around 2.6. There was something else going on that I can't remember, a ridiculously low BP or something. Called doc, who initially orders K-lyte PO for this pt. who is NPO d/t inability to swallow, awaiting PEG placement.

"Dr. K, he's NPO."

"Then give 40meq K+ IV PUSH." :uhoh21:

After gently reminding said doc that this would not be a good idea, I suggested that if we were going to give him an IV bolus, it might be a good idea to move him to tele. (we're on SNF where K+ boluses are rare) Then he said to drop an NG and give the K-lyte through that.

1. We don't even stock NG's on SNF

2. I've never dropped one and I doubt the other 2 nurses on the floor have either (new grads)

"Oh, you're telling me you can't handle this patient. Is that what you're telling me?" Which in reality was true. He didn't belong on the floor. But it was his tone of voice more than anything that burned me up. Truth hurts sometimes. At least he agreed to the transfer.

WAAAAAYYYY back in the earyl '80's,before those lovely mechanized lifts, I was attempting to manually transfer a resident from his very low comfy swivel chair to his bed for our medical director to examine. Instead of assisting me, the rather smug Dr.xxxx stood behind me,ran 2 fingers down either side of my vertebral column as I was bending down to lift and said"All GOOD nurses have them...". When I inquired as to WHAT "them" are, he said"incisions, from your spinal fusion"! I was young,flustered, and SPEECHLESS.

Lol these dr's can be harsh. I've noticed though that the women md's are tougher than the male md's. I mean all of them can go to hell (except when I need an order) but the women are way more moodier imo.
