4560 Gerentology Fall 13

Nursing Students Ohio University

I'm taking this course starting August 26th, anyone with me?

Well, my TA is stuck on Introduction and Conclusion on DB's. Never seen that before. I guess we have to be Houdini to know what they want. And the directions for the DB say no more than 4 paragraphs, but they ask for 3 topic areas and an intro and conclusion, how is that possible. I posted to the Q&A board, but no response tonight.

Specializes in Critical Care, Trauma, Emergency.

Sorry I'm a little late to the party, but I'm in the same boat with the rest of you. #1 DB post "Direct quotes should be used sparingly if at all." Whaaaaaat? Gave me full points though... Still waiting on grade for paper- no idea how I'll fare on that, given I used direct quotes in that too & was completely confused between instructions, rubric, and two sets of "tips" from TA... This is class #7 of #9 nursing classes for me. Seemingly, each one gets more ridiculous than the last... Can't wait until it's over....

Yep, got dinged on the paper for direct quotes. I have no problem following the rules....just need to know what they are. Now I know.

OK, so now there is an announcement from the professor, who has been non existent up to now... anyway, the new rules are: NO direct quotes in DB's and only one sentence direct quote per page in a paper. Now when a paper had a section on quotes from the author, how do we write about the quotes without using them? Crazy!

And my message from the main professor (not the TA) yesterday about quoting said starting with week 3, "Quotes will not be used in discussion board posting and student responses starting week 3". Does this mean we will be getting points back for our excessive qouting week 1???

So for week 1, I just had 1 point deducted from the DB, but my paper she took off 3 points for excessive quoting.

I received the lowest grade I have ever received on week 1 discussion board. I did it like I have in all of the other classes and did fine. There is no consistency in the grading.

Does anyone have grades back for week 1 Evidence Based Practice for Quality Improvement

yes, I do. Amazingly, I have my week 2 grades in already! I think I have a good TA, now that we are over the quoting issues.

Well this is my last class and I just found this board. I have to say, I'm glad that I'm not the only one having TA trouble. This isn't the first class where this happened, but my paper last week was somehow re-formatted in the submission. She took a point off because my references supposedly weren't on a separate page (they were in my original paper). I wrote to her to ask for suggestions. Not only did she say that she couldn't help me fix it, but that it "randomly" happens and that she would not give me the point. I might go over her heard to the professor. She also deducted pointe left and right for excessive referencing. On a literature review. I am an A student and a professional nurse for God's sake. I am also an OU alumna and I'm really disappointed with the program.

I got my lowest grade ever on the QAPI paper. She said that I had too many in-text citations. I thought it was supposed to be a literature review. I don't get it. 10/10 on the db though.

sorry about the QAIP paper. you know, I reviewed and re read my Tuesday's paper like 15 times. I took out almost every quote, had 3 with only a few words, (like 3-4 words), I also found one big mistake, a citation with no reference... wow, I would have gotten killed with that. As it was I got a good grade on that paper.

But, I feel like the TA's are skimming the papers, just looking for APA mistakes, and don't care about the content. That is frustrating.

Hey can anyone help me out with the "brief spiritual assessment"? I seem to have an older version of the textbook that doesn't include it. Mine has something about assessing "spiritual distress", which I'm guessing isn't quite the same thing. What does the brief assessment include?
