Georgia Highlands College Spring 2011

Published

Hello! I am an applicant for the nursing program at Georgia Highlands College for Spring 2011. I was just wondering if there was anyone else on here that is hoping to be accepted to the college as well. Does anyone know the typical schedule, cost, etc.? What were the average scores on the nursing worksheets that were accepted last spring and for this coming Fall 2010 semester?

I'm curios too about the schedule. I know the spring book shows nursing 1101 t/th 9-12 and wed 9-4. I'm trying to arrange childcare for my youngest two.

And any pointers for us newbies???

Congrats dj!!!!! We're up to 4 now!

A little bit, mostly in our online content, but some of the Rome professors have come to our campus to deliver certain lectures in their areas of specialty, and it is my understanding that our professors have done the same in the past.

Tis true, just wondered if there was more interaction than in the past. See you at graduation.

I'm new to the program as a nursing student, but I watched my wife go through the first accelerated class. Things have changed a bit since then.

Get working on the packet now, especially the insurance waiver if it is applicable to you. It can take a while to go through.

The shots, personally I got mine over a year ago in preparation, so I still to have to go get the paperwork filled out. Easiest route is the Department of Health, even if you have a normal doctor.

The photo that's required when you send in your reservation (don't forget to send it in), blank wall (neutral color white or light beige), ajd a digital camera, snap it, crop it, Wal=Mart print it, you're good to go. Save money you'll need it later.

Make sure you know where Heritage Hall is before the 15th, and make sure you set up your registration appt. TEAS is on the 16th. When they say 9 AM, they mean it.

Lynn's in Rome is a great place to buy uniforms. 1. Because they work with the college. 2. Because of proximity to Heritage Hall. No I'm not a shill for them, but I have come to respect them, and the help they provide to students and nurses is second to none.

Remember flexibility. unlike normally college classes, these are block classes, and sometimes they run over. I know when Kath was going, they even asked for students to come in early some days, and I do believe they put in a Friday/Monday or two if memory serves.

Study groups, study groups, study groups. Unless you are totally (and severely) independent, these are a necessity. Find some people local to you or people that can meet up, that are in the program and set up time to study together. What you don't understand, others will, and vice versa. And it also helps to relief stress. Imagine the nursing program being stressful. Now imagine the accelaerated program. yeah, you got it.

Next fall will be fun, we'll still be in the groove, and the previous Fall's admittance class will have to get back in the groove with us. Wife says it's a drag for the first couple of weeks that Fall semester.

The lowest worksheet score was supposedly above 1000 (only slightly). That's way higher than last spring's score or the fall 2010 score. it was competitive. Because of GHC's policy of not giving preference to GHC students, the NCLEX first pass rate for GHC Nursing students is in the high 90% range, and because the spring program is accelerated (cramming 2 yrs worth of material into 1.5 years) it's a popular program. If you made the cut, you deserve to be there. For GHC students, we have friends that we've gone to school with for years at GHC that didn't make it, partially because of the no preference policy. Compared to Fall's 150 or so accepted students, we (all accepted students) are 40 in number. I'm glad I made it, but my heart literally breaks for my friends that I will be leaving behind. Bonding might not be automatic, but it does happen and rather rapidly for the Spring class as we are constantly pushed,

Also some GHC students use Facebook quite a lot to keep in touch and to trade notes etc. Myself, I use facebook and do file storage of materials, lectures, and resources on my private website with access for anyone who asks (through facebook). I did start a group on FB for the Spring 2011 Class (GHC Nursing Spring 2011 Class is the name). If anyone is interested facebook.com/djweaver, say hello, etc.

And as they say in Orientation. "Remember C=RN". Personally I want to graduate with honors. I've been busting my himp for it, but oddly enough "C=RN degree", NCLEX is up to you. (Although I have tips for that too.....)

Honestly, Welcome to GHC! I know y'all see me at orientation, introduce yourselves, either on FB or there.

I am in!! Wahoo!!! WHat a relief!

All I know about the "excellerated" part is that we will not get a summer break like the others that are in now.

Do you guys know if we need to buy all the pants on the list or pick the one we like best and order some of them? I talked to the bookstore yesterday (in Cartersville campus) and he said to be sure to get the "kit's" early to be sure they have them.

Congrats to everyone who got in!

I'm sorry to the others!Don't give up!

@dj

Thanks for all the great info! you answered alot of my questions :)

I think we all should truly feel honored to have been picked and for those who didn't don't give up! I am so looking forward to meeting everyone! I am sure we will become a very close class!

You buy the style of pant that you like, but it has to be on that list.

@taylor3

I'm hoping so on the unity. Getting into the program is a competition with others. Getting out successfully, is a compettition with yourself. I just hope others realize it. (not referencing you as I don't know you).

Congrats to all of you who got in, and those who did not, DO not give up. I am finishing up my first semester, I attend the Marietta campus. The schedule there is Tues/Thurs 9-12 and Wed 9-4. We do have an online component on Friday. I am unsure of the schedule at the Rome campus. As far as the pants go, you just get the pant style that suits you the best. My best advice to those who asked, would be use the cds/ and or websites that come with the textbooks. They are a valuable resource. They have NCLEX style questions for the appropriate material. The test are all these type of questions. Also a NCLEX book can get you more familiar with these type questions. Good Luck!

Has anyone set up their registration time? I have called and left a message twice but no phone call back yet.

@taylor3

Did so yesterday when i first got my packet. I know the 1330 and the 1335 are gone. I've heard from other GHC students that they are having the same problem getting through. Keep on trying is all I can tell you.

Forgot today was Friday. Office closed at 12. Will need to try and setup registration appts on Monday.
