Georgia Highlands College Spring 2011

Published

Hello! I am an applicant for the nursing program at Georgia Highlands College for Spring 2011. I was just wondering if there was anyone else on here that is hoping to be accepted to the college as well. Does anyone know the typical schedule, cost, etc.? What were the average scores on the nursing worksheets that were accepted last spring and for this coming Fall 2010 semester?

Based on my experience with GHC, I'm going to say, "maybe" but good luck. They told me I was missing a class and would not be eligible for admissions even though I had time to take the class again (I actually had the class, but they misread my transcript). I had a 3.43 GPA with all As and Bs in pre-reqs as well as a bachelor's degree from a 4-year college. I may just be "walking bad luck" but I did not get in.

so did you get admitted the next time seeing that they missed the class? what class were you missing?

They said I was missing Nutrition and Anatomy. I majored in Dietetics (Nutrition) and had taken both Anatomy courses - they told me I'd have to reapply. I decided to move onto other colleges (4-year).

You didn't try to argue that? I mean i can't see how someone would be missing the nutrition component seeing as though you majored in it lol. :uhoh3: so they thought you were missing nutrition and anatomy? wow thats a bummer. I thought about a Accelerated BSN but the only ones for next fall that i will make the deadline for is emory and kennesaw, don't care for the 20,000 tuition for emory, and kennesaw I don't know about. I would like the inexpensive route seeing as though i went to a private college already so my debt is already high

I definitely tried to argue and even had a meeting with Nursing Admissions up in Rome. They wouldn't transfer my Anatomy courses (which UGA accepted) and when I informed them of the missing nutrition and that being my major they pretty much just said, "Oh..." I have tried Kennesaw in the past, but they are very hard to get into. I'm going to try West Georgia, Emory, and probably GA State or GA Southern. I'm also trying North Georgia - which would get me the ASN and eventually the BSN - I'm super impressed with their admissions staff and the nursing staff (they sent a e-card for the Holidays :) )

It is good to find others from Georgia. I attended GH for a few semesters. I loved it! My last class was 5 years ago so starting back is going to be hard. At least I got college algebra, English 1, and Psychology out of the way. My sister has an associate degree in Social Work already and worked in social work for 2 years. She is taking preq classes for the RN nursing program at GH now. She was told she didn't need to take the SAT since she has a degree in Social work.. that is so cool. I've thought about doing the LPN program first and transferring to the RN program. I'm afraid I'm wasting too much time by doing LPN first and I heard rumors that people who does the LPN/RN program doesn't do well in the RN program.

Has anyone thought about doing the LPN program? what is your opinion about doing LPN and transferring to RN program?

I am planning to get in for RN prog in FAll of 2011 (full time), will I be able to finish by end of 2012? ie I just want to know how long is the program?

No, if you start in fall of 2011 you will graduate spring of 2013. The fall program goes fall, spring, have the summer off, then fall and spring again.

Hi guys, Ive recently applied to Georgia Perimeter College and Georgia Highlands College to start taking my prerequisites. Ive been accepted to both schools but I am not sure which is a better school. It seems like Georgia Perimeter is a well known school but Ive heard a lot of bad reviews.. But however with Georgia Highlands I can barely find anything on them. If someone could please give me advice on which school they think is better from their experiences it would greatly appreciated!

You're wasting your time doing LPN to RN. You can get an RN in the acclerated program in 17 months. Just no time off. LPN takes around 1.5 years. Then most bridge require you test to get into the program and then another 2 semesters.

Just my opinion on an LPN to bridge if you havent started a program or currently not a nurse.

You'll graduate May 2013. Last class for graduating May 2012 was the spring 2011 Accelerated class.

Fall isn't as competitive for spots as Spring so if your worksheet isn't as strong (over 1000) apply Fall don't wait for Spring (Low acceptance for Spring was a 1001 pts.)

Some pointers

1. Teas is mandatory to be completed before admission for fall 2011 class. Last I knew it doesn't count on the worksheet.

2. If you don't have Clinical Calculations and Medical Terminology, and you don't have time to take it for credit at least grab the books and work yourself through the material. It makes the 1st semester so much easier.

3. There is a Clinical Calc test that is during the first part of each semester. Pass is 90%. You have 2 chances. First one is semi-easy, if you fail the second is harder. 10 questions/30 minutes they provide a basic calculator. You memorize how to do the problems and the equivalencies in the Nursing Student Hanbook.

4. Passing is 75%. If your not at it, end of each semester, you fail out. You can apply one more time. Except for the first test first semester (this one is most comprehension), they are a lot of application NCLEX-style questions. If you ain't familiar grab an NCLEX book at a bookstore and realize what you are facing.

5. Take a philosophy and a critical thinking class (for credit or not). GHC RN program teaches a holistic approach. If you can't get beyond facts, your own mindset, and black/white concrete thinking, you won't make it. I'm not being mean, just brutally honest.

6. If accepted be on time. It's a matter of respect for staff and other students. "Early is on time, on time is late, and late don't bother. This is from a student perspective and some of my classmates that show up late constantly.

7. Tape lectures every lecture. Listening again and again helps a lot. Buy a good recorder w/ a high gain microphone. EBay has several good ones that normally cost 150+ for 79. Storage 53 hrs and I've been running it 20 hrs a week for four weeks straight and still going strong.

8. If you're coming from an outside college, run the trip from your house to Heritage Hall (not main floyd campus) during your morning commute time. Find an average. And 30 minutes for your first day. Be on time.

Good luck and Godspeed, you will need it.
