Georgetown V. NYU accelerated 2nd BSN

Did you apply for the Georgetown scholarship? They are offering 80% scholarship if you agree to work for the non-profit hospital they have partnered with for 3 years. In that case, I'd snap it up in a second. Otherwise, I'm guessing they are both equally great programs...might come down to where you want to live for the next 15 months. I live in NYC (east village) and pay $1725 for a 375 sq. foot apartment. You'll get more space per dollar in D.C., but that's not to say it isn't expensive in DC too. It's just more expensive here, and that may be something to think about. That said, I believe nurses get paid quite a bit more in NYC. I'm looking into accelerated BSN programs, but I've already spent like $300K on a law school degree, so I can't do NYU with its 56K price tag. But, I've done programs at NYU for law school and can tell you that NYU is really something, and it's in a wonderful neighborhood. I'm doing bar review at NYU this summer :-)

did you get accepted in both schools? if yes, then it comes down to where you want to live because both schools are great. if not, then choose the school that will accept you.

hey thanks for the responses. I've already been accepted into both and am in the process of applying the for the georgetown scholarship. I'm most concerned with the program themselves. I've heard both good and bad things about each school.

NYU has about 200 people in the incoming BSN class and so I've heard that the classes are all large lecture courses and some clinicals are a bit crowded, but I would have the resources of the whole university.

Georgetown is supposedly very rigid in the course structure and doesn't really allow any wiggle room, but there are only 60 students in the incoming class which means there is a lot of individualized attention and small clinical groups.

Hi Guys,

Ok I know this thread is pretty old - but I'm going through the exact same predicament here. I just got accepted to NYU although I already put my deposit down for GU. I literally fell in love with GU when I visited for the on-campus interview, but now there are a couple of other factors that I'm still weighing out to see if its worth losing that $900 deposit. I'm hoping someone can help me out and give me more perspective! Here are a few pros/cons that are from the top of my head:

Pros of NYU

- They offer on-campus housing for Accelerated BSN students (which is huge - considering I am moving from California)

- DIVERSITY (really important to me!) - rotations take place in almost every city of NY

- being accepted out of a pool of 4,250 applicants - such an honor!

Cons of NYU

- Class is 200 students and I've read they mix traditional students with the accelerated class

- I've read in threads the program isn't well-organized since its relatively new

- There's not really a "campus" since its seperated (I went to USC where there was one small main campus)

Pros of GU

- 65 students in the class with 5-7 people for clinicals - so I feel the learning environment will be very personal!

- overall i feel very impressed with the organization of the program - and feel that the faculty/staff really care about their students

- small campus

- I'm very interested in pursuing the nurse anesthesia program at GU after working for a year or 2

Cons of GU

- they don't offer student housing - and housing is very expensive overall here! (This is actually stressing me out big time)

- they are making me re-take chemistry since I got a C (I took it freshman year and didn't do that well). I respect the fact that they have high academic standards, but that would mean i have to retake chemistry AND take microbio (which I haven't taken yet) - both during the summer. I planned it out so I can do both and continue to work - but I definitely think I will be burnt out before the program.. NYU's min grade requirement is a C, therefore I wouldn't have to re-take chemistry and fully concentrate on microbio, so this is a huge consideration...

The 2 biggest things I'm looking at are:

1) the program itself and how much I will learn from it

2) Job availability in the area after graduation..

In both cases, tuition won't be an issue (I think they are probably around the same - GU quoted about $75k for the program, I think NYU might be slightly less?)

Overall, I was very set on GU - but the problem with having to retake chemistry as well as not having student housing available really draw me towards NYU more...

Hey, I don't if you decided where you wanted to go yet, and I know this was posted a month ago, but I thought I'd reply anyways.

I really don't think having to retake chemistry is such a big deal, it will be a good review for you.

I too got accepted in to NYU's nursing program for Fall 2009, but as a transfer. But I was informed that I could take either the accelerated 15-month BSN program or the 2 year BSN program.

The class size of NYU scares me too.

I'm also interested in being a nurse anesthesiologist. CRNAs make a lot of money.

Let me know what you've decided with the schools..

Fudge! Georgetown! full of stuck ups and only look at GPA and not why you want to be a nurse. Frankly this field is inundated with nurses just doing it for the money. GU is only concerned with stats and how to make their program better qualified to move up on the ranks of U.S. and world report for best nursing programs. They could care less if they are cranking out nurses who think that its cool to be a nurse just by watching episodes of Grey's Anatomy. I interviewed with GU and didnt like them one bit.

Hi sasagrrrl! I have been following this feed because I am in the same predicament as you were--choosing between Georgetown and NYU for spring 2010. I have always loved NYC, but I also know that the Georgetown program has the smaller classes, etc. I have a few days to decide, and I haven't a clue what to do! I am afraid I have not heard much about the NYU program, so I cannot make a real, informed decision. What school did you decide on? Are you happy with it? Thank you so much! Any advice would be appreciated. :)

Giggles, you seem to be pretty anti-GU and I find that odd since it's my number on choice. If you dont mind my asking, what caused this negative impression...like what exactly happened in the interview? Also, what was your undergraduate college, GPA and major? Do you know the average GPA of accepted students?
