George Washington ABSN Fall 2014

U.S.A. Washington DC

Published

I just submitted my application to GWU for the ABSN program that will start in the Fall of 2014 and wanted to start a thread for it. Has anyone else applied recently? If so, has anyone heard early from admissions?

Good luck to you all!

Congrats, everyone! I graduate from GWU's ABSN in 40 days (not that I'm counting down or anything, hah!) Feel free to PM me if you have any questions :)

Re: GMU. I know they say they won't send decisions until late April (they make a big point of that!) but I got a letter from them two weeks ago! (Waitlisted.) A friend of mine was accepted and got her letter the day after me. So I'm not sure how they define "late April".....

I received a letter from Mason's ABSN program about a week ago... got waitlisted. So I guess I don't have to make a decision anymore! Haha :cat:

Are you graduating now Mindylan??

Hi Mindylane

I just got into GWU. I live in Arlington and I want to touch base with a GWU student to discuss some concerns etc. Could I call you or could you contact me. I am going to GWU campus this Thursday. Perhaps I can treat you to coffee on a well deserved break?

My contact info is 201 560 6454. I have to make my decision very soon so I am a bit anxious about making the right choice. Any advice woudl greatly be appreciated. It would be best to talk on the phone or for me to take you out for coffee at a location of your convenience as I know you must be very busy.

Thanks so much for your help

Warm regards,

Lauren Montalvo

Congrats Mindy! I just tried to PM you but your inbox is full. I was accepted into the GW program last week. I have been out of school for awhile with no healthcare background so I am a little nervous about the accelerated pace of the program. How many hours did you typically spend studying outside of class per week? Did it decrease as the program went on? Were you able to find mentorship through any of the professors?

Hey Cycle, sorry about that! I just emptied it out (had no idea I had so many messages in there) so feel free to try sending it again, or I can just answer your questions on here.

I didn't really have any healthcare experience, per se, I worked in human services as a case manager with adults & children with disabilities... I did a nursing internship beforehand (it was very brief) and although I worked alongside healthcare professionals, I had no experience actually doing it. There are plenty of people in my cohort with no experience, whatsoever... some of my classmates are straight out of their first degree, so you won't be alone there :)

The pace is pretty intense, as is the sheer volume of work. I'd say, for med-surg (I & II), pharm, OB & Peds, we spent many hours per week reading/reviewing/studying.... I can't really say how many because I don't think I ever quantified it, but you'll be working your butt off, for sure. The good thing about GWU is that the professors are proactive in helping the students; if you have any problems whatsoever, they are there to help you through it and they offer opportunities to remediate (in the case of competencies) and get extra help. The teachers' offices are in the same building as classes are and they are very accessible. I also worked part-time (and this semester, have gone up to almost full-time) so I also had that outside of class, and I still managed. This semester (the last one), we had preceptorship, which I was in the first group for, so I was finished by early March... which is why I'm able to work so much, which is awesome! We've just had big projects and papers this semester, so there's a lot of downtime. I think each semester you have one full day off during the week; the first semester, one day was clinical (Friday/Monday) and then the other day was off (Friday/Monday) and then over the summer we had a lot of free time, too!

When I started the program, I assumed I'd NEVER have a break or time off. We got spring break, winter, thanksgiving, etc. off, which I was so surprised about.

There are admittedly "kinks" that they are still working out... you can PM me for the specifics. But if you do the work you're supposed to do, do your readings, keep yourself organized and know what's due and when, (and, frankly, are able to just go with the flow) you'll get through it. I know some of my classmates were frustrated with some disorganization, but I just kinda went along with it and I've made it this far, so you just gotta plan and manage your time well. :) It really is doable. There were times when I was thinking how much easier it would be to just quit, but of course I never did and am so happy that in 39 days, I will be graduating (with pretty awesome grades, too) and I do already have an interview for a job at the end of this month.

A lot of hospitals WANT GWU students, and I know some preceptors have said that they ONLY want to work with our school. A lot of the hospitals in the area offer residencies (how you get a job as a new grad) so I think NoVA is one of the best places to be as a new grad.

Please let me know if there's any other info you need :)

Mindy

Mindylane- this is just so incredibly awesome- thank you so much! I PM'd you too.

cycle, I hope you got my PM... I just sent a long winded response and there's nothing in my "sent" folder so I'm hoping it went through!!

Is anyone still waiting for their application to be sent for final review?

Musing2014, I am still awaiting an email saying that my application has been forwarded to the admissions committee. I was told that it was actually 1-3 weeks after the application was verified by NursingCAS for the application to be sent to the committee. Either way, it's been over a month since I received the initial email from GWU and I'm still waiting. Best of luck to you!
