George Brown RPN placements?

Published

Hi everyone!

Well I have started my Pre-Health course and I am finding it really easy and fun!

I just need some input from RPN's. So yesterday I had the unfortunate experience of attending a group where these 2 young women were in the RPN program at George Brown and were saying that it was only Geriatrics, now granted there is nothing wrong with that except the fact that I thought RPN's had a broader range of practice not just in seniors homes.

Can someone help me in clarifying where George Brown RPN students are placed for clinicals? Is it all long term care? Or is it that they start in long-term care and move on to hospitals late down the line?

The reason I'm asking this is my ultimate goal is to be in the OR as an OR tech, I know I have to take a post-grad course for this after RPN.

No it's not all LTC placements. No programs is.My daughter started in January. Her first placement was LTC and this semester it's Bridgepoint Health. My own program was LTC. hospital, community and mental health placements.Where you do your placements has no effect on post grad certifications.

Hi Lori,

Thanks for that! It really alarmed myself and my gf who is going to do the same program.

Can I ask where you did your program and where your daughter is?

Thanks!

I did mine at Georgian College in Orangeville and my daughter is at George Brown in TO.

Specializes in AC, LTC, Community, Northern Nursing.

Usually first placement is LTC tp learn body mechanics, turning and positioning, how to change an adult, make beds etc.. Learn the basics.. You can do a final practicum in LTC if te student wants to

I go to Mohawk and am in my last semester. No, not all the placments are LTC but hardly anyone got the placments you're "suppose" to get. For example, second semester rotation is medical, third surgical and fourth maternity /psych. But there arent enough placements so I got complex continuing care in second, medical in third and rehab in fourth. Only a select few lucky ones got all the "correct" rotations (and strangely, it seemed to be all the same people). However there is much to be learned at any placement, and I have had great learning experiences at all of mine, it's just harder to follow along and relate course work to clinical experiences. It may be different for george brown though, maybe there are more placements because it's Toronto.

Even if they did make you do all your placements in LTC (which they won't) you can still work acute or wherever you want when you graduate.

I started out in LTC and did my final placement their but since graduation I have worked acute spine, neuro and pulmonary/thoracics

Thanks all for your replies thats really reassuring. Lori if you can provide more information about GBC specifically that would be great!

Thanks again! :)

What did you want to know?

Specifically placements and where they are. :nurse:

Specializes in Acute Care, Rehab, Palliative.

Well they are not the same for everyone. They make an effort to take into consideration of what part of the city you live in. You go in small groups. They don't send everyone to the same spot. Both of my daughter's placement groups have been about 8 people. There are about 160 people in her class.

This is false. I am in the GBC PN program, 3rd semester and am not in Long Term Care.
