What is this called???

Nursing Students General Students

I work at a community college and we are starting a new curriculum. We are going to have the students pair up with an elder to complete the nutritional assessment, cultural assessment etc. They will use this same person to perform their head to toe final assessment too. Is this called care partner or something along that line? I am writing a paper concerning this and all I come up with is Service-Learning, which that isn't what it is.

thanks

Vicki

Specializes in Endocrinology.

Vicki, Welcome to the boards. I'm not sure what you can call it, but I like that idea of practicing head to toe assessments on a real live person before being set loose in the public.

What is the paper about? Are you writing about the process or about the learner? Are you creating a paper for a school grade or for publication or what? Curricula are based on the mission of the school and the nursing dept. You must have objectives, so you can effectively evaluate outcomes. Give us a little more info so we can help you more.

Meanwhile, look at these: http://www.nnsdo.org, http://www.nurselearn.com, http://www.enursescribe.com, http://www.knowingmore.com

Specializes in L&D.

We did this also. 1st semester was learning how to take a hx and perform an assessment and we did it on an elderly person.

Specializes in Emergency & Trauma/Adult ICU.

We did this as well, before starting clinicals. The experience served its purpose well - for many of us it was the first time we "played the role" of a nurse and it was very valuable to have that first experience in asking questions, listening actively, and to begin to see the inter-relatedness of various medical and psychological aspects of care.

Specializes in critical care; community health; psych.

We call it our "well elder" assignment.

I didn't know there was an actual name for it, but we did that in LPN classes with a classmate.

And here all this time I thought it was just for practice! LOL!

Good Luck!

Julie
