Plus size nursing students

Nursing Students General Students

Published

I hope to be attending nursing school in the fall. Those nursing students out there who are plus sized: did you have any problems getting the uniforms in the larger sizes? My biggest fear is getting there and the largest size they have would not fit me.

Thanks

We practiced transfers, positioning, bed baths (in shorts and t-shirts), mannual BP, breath and heart sounds on each other but everything else we did on the special teaching dummies.

this is absolutely terrifying :crying2:

We did no bed bath practicing and all of us turned out just fine and are pros at it now.

Suzy mentioned something that I hadn't thought of - I'm not plus-sized (yet, but haven't so much been working out since NS started) but I am 6 feet tall. There are only 2 brands of jeans that fit me, and it hadn't even crossed my mind to worry about scrubs. Thankfully, we just have to have all white, and can buy from anyone. I'm making a note that Landau offers tall - does anyone else? Thanks!

I'm also 6 feet tall and the Lydia's Pro-Series scrubs I mentioned before are long enough for me. You might also try men's scrubs. I have seen men's tall scrubs with a 35.5 inch inseam (I normally need about a 35 inch inseam, but The 32.5 on the Lydias seems to work well because scrubs have such a long rise). I don't plan to buy more scrubs until after I graduate but I think I'll probably go for men's cargo-style pants when I do - they're long enough, and I always need more pockets than I have.

ETA: I also have a pair of Dickie's tall scrub pants and they are NOT long enough for me. Definitely double check the inseam lengths - I think the Dickies I have only have a 31 inch "tall" inseam which is not anywhere near long enough!

future L&D, apnea, thanks! Yeah, my inseam is 34, and that's hard enough to find in anything - but at least I only had to go to 2 malls the last time I wanted a new pair of Levi's. I can't imagine a 35! We don't start clinicals until August, so I'm trying to write everything I'm trying to remember down now...all that pharm keeps displacing everything else in my brain. Appreciate it!

I always hear this but I promise it's not as nice as you think! I'm also 6'0 and on the hefty side and can go into a full panic attack just from pants shopping!:uhoh3:

honey my BMI is 17 and i take a paper bag to breathe into every time i'm forced to go shopping :(

I am a very large man. I wasn't worried too much about the scrub sizes because I worked as a STNA for a few years. It shouldnt be difficult at all to find scrubs to fit. I wear a 3x in landau scrubs.

As far as the bed bath I was a little worried because the guys were supposed to bathe guys and the ladies were to bathe the other ladies (I am gay, and knew the other males would be very uncomfortable.) In my class there are 5 guys and 25 ladies. Perhaps the odd thing played out and this policy was forgotten very quickly.

The bed bath thing was very unnerving to say the least but it taught me alot about how it feels for my patients who have to deal with different people coming in at different times pulling down the blankets and washing them up. My patients have to deal with much more embarassment than I had to during the bed bath lab. Tank top n shorts is what I wore. But I would have to say that I learned much more about respect, privacy and how it feels (kinda) to be a patient. It was an excellent lesson and I think it will help to make me a more caring and understanding nurse one day. I think its a lesson all nurses should have to learn.

Just my opinion.
