I went into surgery and loved it! It was the most awesome and wonderful day I've had since beginning nursing school!
I saw a Lower Anterior Sigmoid Colon Resection w/ appendix removal
A right breast "lumpectomy" (is that the right word?)
and a total hysterectomy w/ appendix removal...
I am so tired that I could just drop, but I have never been so satisfied with any one area of nursing....
Wow. And I didn't really think I would be able to handle it...
I am amazed. Now I have to fight the battle within myself....
geriatric nursing or surgical nursing...
Had to tell you guys! My husband thinks I'm weird and my kids think I'm gross. Who else to turn to but you all?
I just thought it was great!!!!! :D :D :D

I am only taking pre-requisites right now, but I am also interested in surgery. I never really thought of the human body as gross. I think it is fascinating. I am volunteering in the OR of the hospital here on base every Friday. I have yet to see my first surgery, but will soon. I definately don't think you are weird. I have only been in the OR a couple of days so far, but think it is interesting so far. I am happy for you that you enjoyed your day so much. Keep up the good work.

That is why I am in nursing school. I already know I want to work in the OR. Surgery is WAY cool.

Hi Julie
My OR rotation is next week, on the 19th. I can't wait! I have been considering going into surgical nursing for a little while, and I'll get to find out if I like it.
My classmates who have already done their rotations have the same reaction you have, they loved it. Even the ones who were scared to death that they would puke or pass out really liked it! With my luck, and as eager as I've been, I'll probably be the one with a weak stomache!
I'm glad you had a really great experience! It must be nice after all the stress of studying for exams, care plans, and clinicals, to come away feeling good and like it's all been worth it!

Wow that is nice Juile. It is tough to choose between two areas but you will find the one you truly want to go in. I thought the OR was pretty cool but I was just so freezing cold I could not stop shaking. People say you get use to it. I am already a cold-natured person anyway. I get cold very easily.

Good for you Julie! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
I *hated* the OR..... but then I'm weird.

I didn't like the OR either.... seemed like the RN's role consisted mainly of documenting sponge and needle counts. The only patient interaction I saw was pre-op when the RN reviewed consents etc....
The scrub tech job looked interesting...
Just goes to show you nursing is a great job to have because it's so diverse.
