Aside from the possible change of editions and the cost factor, why would you want used textbooks instead of new ones, and vice versa?

I want new because of all the highlighter in the used ones.

Hmmm. I wondered about that. Wasn't sure whether highlighter-ridden books would be allowed to be sold back or not.

If it has no highlighting in it, I will buy a used book simply because they are less expensive. I always make sure to get the correct edition.
I've also sold several textbooks I didn't think I would use again.

I've always got used unless they're using a new book and used isn't an option.

I couldn't imagine buying new if a decent used one is an option. I don't mind a little highlighting. Money is the main factor for purchasing used. Unfortunately, I've yet to find a local bookstore that sells the used nursing books that we need.

Okay for me being of a "weird" nature.....I prefer the science books and anything I want to keep new, but for example the public speaking, computer, language, math, english textbooks I rather have used since I don't intend to keep them and will more than likely pass them on to friends or needy students. :)

If it is a major text, I want new. The highlighting in used can be confusing, I would rather have my own highligted areas to know what is important. If it is a supplemental book then used is fine.

I bought my philosophy textbook new for $40. We NEVER used it in class. I went to sell it back today and the bookstore told me I could sell it back for $7. GGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR :angryfire
If you didn't take the 7 bucks, you might try selling it on ebay/half.com or the amazon.com marketplace!
That always stinks! Lord knows its happened many times.
I think that's what I'm going to have to do. Taught me a lesson though. Now, I only buy new books when I know I'm going to use them all the time and may have to look to them for future reference. Most of the books at my bookstore don't have highlighting in them. Sometimes you just have to dig for the better ones!
