Aside from the possible change of editions and the cost factor, why would you want used textbooks instead of new ones, and vice versa?
Okay for me being of a "weird" nature.....I prefer the science books and anything I want to keep new, but for example the public speaking, computer, language, math, english textbooks I rather have used since I don't intend to keep them and will more than likely pass them on to friends or needy students. :)
What a nice thing to do!:) I'm so eager to get that quick refund, I haven't even considered that.
I always try to get used, but buy early to get the best condition. I look for the used book from the student who never cracked it open, but drove around with it in the back seat before dropping the class! :chuckle
I'll spend my money on a good stethoscope or maybe a pair of Dansko clogs anyday!
I refuse to buy used sight unseen (ie via the internet) because I've heard enough stories of missing pages and excessive notes and highlighting within. And trying to find used around campus is almost impossible because even if we're lucky enough for an edition to be used more than a couple of years in a row, students tend to keep their books after they graduate for reference material.
I couldn't imagine buying new if a decent used one is an option. I don't mind a little highlighting. Money is the main factor for purchasing used. Unfortunately, I've yet to find a local bookstore that sells the used nursing books that we need.
Try Half.com, I've gotten great used nursing books from them.
