The slides were probably the most helpful - bottom line, if she mentions it on her videos, or talks about it in class, then you need to know it, regardless of whether or not it is on the syllabus. Good luck! You'll do fine...

Can anybody in 4th sem tell me what it's like? And what is the difference between a preceptor clinical and the clinicals we normally have. I am soooo nervous about 4th. Is it true that we will not get to enjoy our full Christmas break, and have to go to a psych hospital? uggh that would be so not cool :angryfire!!!!

Trust me...I'd rather had started early than to have to do psych rotations during the semester, along with the regular stuff.

Not everyone goes early.

Any suggestions on how to prepare for Psych? Read text...do the slides help any? I'm going to go to lecture...anything that you can add, will be most helpful, Ms. Gray is teaching it.

I found this: http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=henleydb.

It helped me to get a 'different perspective' on each topic. Compare your notes as you listen, just in case there are any differences. (I don't remember what it was, but I really only found one.....and it wasn't major.)

I think I used these for 3rd and 4th....don't remember.

A preceptorship is totally different. I've seen my clinical instructor 3 times since the semester started - once at orientation, once at midterm, and on Halloween when she brought goody bags to the preceptors. You are truly learning to be a nurse, and gain alot more autonomy. I highly recommend it. I have Dr. Reece, and it has been a wonderful experience. The lecture material has been easier, I think, mostly because we've been exposed to everything to some degree before. Hang in there - you can almost see the light at the end of the tunnel...it's blinding me right now!!! :chuckle

Hi,

I love this thread because theres so much information on so many things!! I come back over and over to read it!! am starting el centro in Spring 09 and i just wanted to see if i could get any info on clinical instructors!!( i know i should go by proff. not locations!) Any pointers?? And is ECC really as disorganized as it seems? Alwyays changing dates and schedules!!

Congrats on being accepted. Yes, they really are as disorganized as they seem, and frankly, they couldn't care less about it and have no desire to change it. It's almost like they want to prove they own you for 2 years. I hear McCarty is good, Darensbourg is really a sweet sweet lady, and I didn't hear anything bad about clinical with her. I can't remember who else did them. Shrivastava I think was one, but I'm not sure if she's still doing 1st semester. I'd put her down the line a bit. O'Meara is wonderful if she is doing them though. If you have any other names to trigger my memory, I'll tell you what I can. I'd get your books/book box ASAP, and start reading now to get a jump on it. I've got the old reading list if you need it.

I looked online and they have Galloway, Beecham,Stanfield, Melton P. Am guessing they might have changed a couple of instructors!! Would you suggest buying the book box? Did you use all the books in it? I know it comes with cd"s in it but i like having actual books. $800 is really high but i guess it depends on how many of the books you use.

I don't think that is a current list of instructors. Galloway is very tough - I had her for a skills lab - and she takes no crap and gives no 100s. I loved Beecham, but I'm 99% sure she isn't teaching 1st semester. She does 3rd. Eventhough I loved Beecham, she is very paperwork intensive and very hard on the students. However, she is super intelligent and will have you whipped into shape by the end of the semester. I don't know much about Stanfield other than she had some medical problems a year ago. I don't know anything about Melton either. I used the book box every semester, but I live on the laptop and have loved having computer access to my books. If you like actual books, then I wouldn't buy it - save the money and buy online. Hey, I'll be selling my books here shortly and they've never even been opened :wink2:.

congratulations yang on your internship!!!!!!!!!!!! :yeah::yeah::yeah:

i don't live too far from where you'll work...

missb08- if you have melton as a choice for first semester, choose her as number one. she's such an amazing, supportive, intelligent person. i had darensberg (sp?) in my first semester and it was like a train wreck 24/7 but she was sweet and wanted the best for her students unlike her colleagues i.e. galloway, in my opinion.

MissB08, I will be at El Centro too. Do you know when the clinical assignments will be done, on the Nov 18th orientation? And where did you order the name badges, if you did?

What Clinical instructor/hospital options will we have for the first semester? May be current first semester students can provide some information.

Thanks.
