Curious. How many "older" students

Nursing Students General Students

It seems that alot of people are doing nursing for a second career. Just curious. How old is everyone? Who has kids? Is it a mixed group in the professional part of the nursing program (I am still doing pre-reqs)? Where are you living and what school do you plan on going to. BSN or ADN? What area of nursing do you want to go into?

I am 32, will be 33 in August. I am married with 3 kids. I live in Phoenix and will be going to Arizona State University for my BSN. I am doing the BSN rather than the ADN because I would like to be a CNM. Although I am also interested in ICU too.

IThink I do nusing for 10 years then Law school..LOL :)

Don't you dare!! We need every able body we have. Let the lawyers get their's the old fashioned way. Trolling!!!

Happy Birthday, Manna!! :balloons:

I'm 36, a SAHM of 4, ages 13, 11, 9, and 7. I used to be in the publishing industry, working in magazine advertising. I left that when my 3rd child was 10 months old. I started taking a class here and there, all the time knowing I wanted to be a nurse. I got side-tracked with the birth of my 4th child, but now that he's in 2nd grade, I decided to go back full-time, get done with my pre-req's, and apply to nursing school. I'm still hoping to get in for this coming fall, and if that doesn't work, I'll try to get into an LPN or CNA program. I actually sent in my CNA application and they have classes starting soon, but I may (IHOPEIHOPEIHOPEIHOPE!!) get into my top-choice of nursing schools. I'm just waiting to hear now.

What a great thread! I love reading everyone's stories. My MIL graduated from nursing school at the age of 57, and wasn't even the oldest in her class. Where there is a will, there's a way! She also graduated with a wonderful woman from South Africa, who was getting her BSN, then going on to become a Dr. Her belief was that being a great nurse with caring and compassion would make her a better physician. There are as many great personal stories as there are people! :)

I just got accepted into the RN program to begin in the fall. I will graduate in May with my Associate of Arts degree (wanted to make sure I had something in case I don't make it in nursing).

How do you complete an RN program in 2 semesters? Even with all the pre-reqs out of the way how would you have enough clinical time?

Just curious

I don't think she's completing her nursing program in two semesters. She said she was getting her Associate's in something unrelated to nursing next spring.

Ahhh, that would make sense.

Thanks

Count me in....I'm 41, I have 5 kids (ranging from 19 to 5) and live in Avon, NY. I start LPN school tomorrow, but will also start doing some self study pre-reqs through Excelsior College in anticipation of enrolling in their nursing school next year to get my RN. I finish LPN school in December this year.

Decided to go into nursing after I got laid off this year from Kodak. I have always wanted to go into nursing and planned to do so if I ever did get laid off.

I'm 33...turning 34 the end of May. I have a 14 y/o daughter who will be entering high school this fall & a 15 y/o stepson. I've got a Bachelor Degree in Psychology, which got me nowhere, so I've done clerical/administrative type work for the past 10 years. Just started taking pre-req's last Spring to work toward my ADN. Planning on going thru an RN-BSN completion program after I graduate & get a job. Still on the waiting list for my cc...hopefully will be starting the nursing program this fall or next January.

I'm 27 (today!), mom of two boys (5 and 2), work full-time, go to school 3/4-time at night/online, and am hoping to get accepted to a BSN program (junior year begins July 2004)... still waiting on a letter. :o

Happy Birthday!!

I'm 28, married with 3 kids & a step-daughter. I worked in 3 unfulfilling office jobs from the time I was 16 until my youngest was born when I was 23. I knew I didn't want to go back to office work, & one day I realized that I wanted to be a nurse. I was enrolled at the local CC within 2 weeks and I started on my prerequisites a month after that. 3 years later, I'm in my 3rd semester of nursing classes and although it is very challenging, I love it & haven't regretted my decision.

i haven't had any apparent issues w/respect with other nurses. i can't say that i know what they're thinking about me, but it doesn't exactly keep me awake at night, ya know? i do my best to work hard, know my stuff, and be a team player. anyone who has issues with that ... well, i think they have issues themselves, not with me.

i haven't had any negative feedback either other than that from my dogs ex vet...lolol

i was like..my dogs get a checkup and i did too! haha

no.. and i agree, nothing to lose sleep over..that's for sure..just so surprising when it's been said point blank to ya tho...lol

but..i am a happy camper..i just took an anatomy ii test this past monday that i was sweating the grade on...i am so happy.. made a 90 on a 4 chapter exam...so it's happy day today!! :)..and uhh..no curve...lol..

also..happy birthday manna! thanks mlos and lizz for the uplifting feedback.

28 years old. no kids not married. have a loving and supportive girlfriend who will be going into nursing school just like i am and we will do this together.

i also work full time as an assistant controller.

i dont like my job, all i do is crunch numbers and create reports.

Opalm - Sorry if I confused you. It will take 5 semesters to complete the RN program so I will finish May 2006.

I have been taking classes for what seems like forever, so I have enough classes to obtain my Associate of Arts Degree which is the first two years of a 4 year degree. I wanted to have my two year degree just in case down the road, you just never know. Also, it looks better on a resume that putting "some college".
