Bombed Chem test (feeling low)

Hey gals,

I have a really sucky Chem teacher and to make matters worse I got the lowest grade in the class on the last test. I am seriously thinking that I am too stupid to be a nurse. I have never felt so low and confused in my life. Maybe I should just try to go back and get my MA certificate. Anyone have any ideas on how to become an OB tech. Thanks for the time...

Rebecca :crying2:

Obviously you are just beginning your pre-req's, therefore it is way too early to give up. Whether you do well in Chemistry or not will not determine what kind of nurse you will be. Have you thought of getting a tutor? Chemistry is only the beginning. Honestly it's going to get a whole lot worse before it gets better. You just have to hang in there. I just took Chemistry last semester and I got a little stressed out but I kept at it.

By the way, I noticed you live in Victorville, do you go to AVC? If so, I could recommend a great Chemistry instructor.

Chemistry is not easy and is harder for some than others. How well you do in chemistry is no indication of how well you will do in nursing school or as a nurse. Don't give up. You'll just have to work harder by scheduling tutoring and studying that way. Tutors are available at school, but few people use them.

Go for it.

Please don't give up! One test is NOT indicative of anything, but just says you may need to rethink how you study or what you study. Sciences are hard, and it makes it worse when you have a rotten teacher. Can you get extra help? A lot of schools offer free academic counseling, and maybe someone knows about this teacher's testing/teaching style and can give you pointers.

Chemistry is NOT "hard". It simply does not tolerate inadequate preperation and, being a science, calls for quantitative answers. It is also developing those critical thinking skills :)

Did you practice a *lot* of problems over and over again? Being comfortable with your math skills will let you focus on the concepts being presented. I notice that those who do bad with chemistry are just are not up to par with the math skills it requires.

So don't give up girl. Get with a tutor, spend a lot of time working on problems. Chemistry requires a lot of time working problems and learning the nomenclature of it--it's a lot of work (but that doesn't mean its "hard" and that you can't do it...its just a lot of work).

Chemistry is the basis for everything in life, and it will definatly come in useful for your other classes so don't give up before you have even gotten started!

Don't give up!!

In terms of going for your MA, some of those classes are extremely difficult as well. The lab classes, learning how to read blood smears etc... medical office procedures, it is not easy either. Just hang in there. Hopefully you can learn some different study habits to help you retain the information and learn how the questions are going to be asked. You may find chemistry hard, and micro easy, you never know :)

Hey Rebecca!

PLEASE do not give up!! I am taking Chemistry 3 A (Intro) this semester too. Our teacher is a really nice guy, but is not a very good teacher. So I have had to look elsewhere (mostly within) to understand what we are doing.

Here are a few websites that have helped me out a lot...

http://www.chemtutor.com/ This one is great!

I know it's for kids, but when I am stuck... I can get a basic answer and then go back to my text....

http://www.chem4kids.com/

http://antoine.frostburg.edu/chem/senese/101/intro/index.shtml

look under chemistry and also do searches under exact items like "ions" etc.

http://www.flashcardexchange.com/index.php

That should give you a start...... also do searches on the internet for beginnnig or intro to chemistry etc.

Check out the companion website for your textbook too.... most publishers have them.

I do all the practice problems for every chapter to get the idea's and info down pat. If you haven't already, find a study group. This has been a terrific source for information, understanding and inspiration when I am confused or overwhelmed.

I wish you the best and hang in there!!!

To be an OB tech you have to know how to scrub... C/S, hyster's, tubals and even some light plastic work is sometimes needed. I went to school for 13 months to learn these skills. You also have to pass a state certification test.

Really? Cause before I decided on Nursing I seriously thought of being an OB Tech but I couldn't find how to get specialized training. Where did you go to school?

Hi SunnyBrook23,

Don't give up yet! I took Chemistry and ended up in the ICU because of the stress....I hated it and it hated me!!! My Chem professor would spend hours explaining things for chem majors but if a nursing major asked a question, we got the royal blow-off. His standard answer to nursing students was "Its in the book" Despite the stress, the sucky test grades, the unanswered questions, and the joke of a professor, I survived and passed the test. I didn't care that it was my only C. I was happy with the A's and B's in all my other classes. When you pass that chem class.....and YOU WILL.....walk out of the classroom and shake the dust off your feet! You will do FINE!!!
