Atheist Professers

 Hi everyone! I'm kind of new here, and I have a question: Right now I'm in A&P and my professor is an all out atheist. I realized when I decided to go the nursing route I would encounter many scientific minds, but whew! How do you fellow believers keep this from getting to you? Just a little friendly conversation starter, not trying to start a creation vs evolution debate. Hope to hear from yall!

Ker-Ker,

WELLLLLL........I feel ya! I have had two experiences with all out atheist professors. I am a very religous person and each time I was faced with this problem I dreaded going to class with a passion. I would start to feel physically sick when it was time for class. One of my professors, though, kept his beliefs, or lack there-of, to himself. The other, though, seemed to have a personal vendetta against believers of all faiths. Now down here in the south part of Mississippi, we're not exactly culturally diverse. Our idea of diverse is Baptist, Methodist, and Pentecostal. So, it goes without saying that many of the people in my class (62 of us) were affiliated with one or the other of these groups. It was miserable. There were several times when we had students (myself included) walk out in the middle of a lecture because of degrading remarks he made about Christians. However, I did survive, with a LOT of prayer and a lot of perserverance. So, my advice to you would be to give it over to God, keep your head up, and never let anyone make you feel less than worthy because you are a person of faith.

welcome to the board! if i did have an atheist instructor, i was not aware of it. the only problem i would have was if one was trying to "convert" me to their beliefs. i have not any problems with how one feels, or in whom a person believes in, i don't want him/her/ throwing it at me and i wouldn't throw my beliefs either. if the situation was to "much", i would change instructors, otherwise, i would get the learning from the subject at hand.

When people keep spouting off the mouth about how they detest one religion or another.....especially when that one is in a teaching capacity, and he/she is NOT teaching religion classes....but A&P.....don't see how the topic should come up anyway...BUT anyhoo....that person needs to be told to "stick to the topic at hand or you'll report their behavior to the Dean". Have you done this yet? Has anyone else reported him for it? If not......why not??? The college hired him to teach A&P.....NOT cast stones at beliefs that he disagrees with, etc. If you do NOT report him, and continue to listen to his hateful babble....then your only recourse is to listen to it, and get through the class, OR drop out of his class. Do you prefer to confront what is wrong, and right it, or do you just prefer to complain about what is wrong, and sit on it? :kiss

Hi there Nurse Ker-Ker. This is the first time I have posted but I just felt like I had to say something. Is this professor making derougatory comments about religion? Or is he just public with his opinion? I am an atheist and I do not feel that it is right to put down anybody's religion or lack of religion. But I also feel that he shouldn't have to hide his views. If a Christian teacher were talking about god or putting down atheists would you be as offended? I'm not trying to start an argument, I just wanted more information. Most atheists do not try to convert others. I would never consider it. Actually I think it is the other way around. I cannot count the number of times that I have had someone want to "talk to me about god." Or the number of times I have had to defend my ideas. I don't even talk about my lack of belief unless asked directly. I think that it is a personal matter. I hope this post dosen't sound argumentative. If he is being deraugatory then I think you should take the matter to the dean (or whoever is in charge.)

welocme to the board!

I had an atheist Biology instructor. He forwarned us belivers the day before the heavy-duty evolution lecture - in case we wanted to stay home that day. I thought that was really thoughtful of him :)

If he is teaching evolution in genetically oriented fashion ( by that I mean, e.g, humans evolved genetically to enable us to speak. That has given us an ecological edge over other animals that may use a type of language to communicate [i'm thinking whales and dolphinsw/ their clicks and so forth), but generally do not use spoken language. In doing this, humans have lost some control over their airways--no other animal chokes on food like humans.) If that's what you mean by what he's teaching you, just learn it, regurgitate it on the test, and adios, prof!

If all he talks about is how dumb religion and faith are, evolution vs creation, etc., that's not exactly a complete course on A&P. AND, it;s disrespectful of the students to be obnoxious about his belief system.

I had a sociology professor who told us he was a Marxist. I didn't care, but he was a lousy teacher. Whenever we were supposed to "discuss" something, he would invariable tell a student, NO! You're wrong! in those words. Needless to say, we didn't discuss. Then he got pi**ed at us because he would try to start a discussion, and no one would participate. I did complain about him because I happened to encounter a Dean. It was worse because the class was all older students--and we just wanted to get Sociology off the "to do" list.

If he's really bugging you, complain. It's YOUR education and YOUR $$. I would try not to drop the class because that will just slow you down. Learn your A&P, get a good grade and be done w/this "specimen"

Good Luck!!

I usually will take another professor is one is available!!!! I mean, lets face it, these are confused little individuals!!!!!
