General Nursing School Prerequisites??

Hi Smallwonders07,

For nursing pre-reqs, it is usually A&P I and II, microbiology. A lot of course will depend on the nursing program that you are applying to. In general, I would suggest taking all of your general education courses so that once you are in the nursing program you can concentrate on just your nursing classes. Other classes to consider would be a human life span development course (usually under psych), nutrition, chemistry (an intro or general course), algebra, and sociology.

I had to take A&P I and II, Microbiology, Statistics. They also ask for psych, some schools chemistry. There also sociology, human development/family studies.

Hi,

I am not sure what state you are calling from but I am currently taking pre-reqs to get into nursing school. Usually schools require 4 classes be taken and based on your grades determines if you are to get in, but you can take all the other pre-reqs also before you apply. There are 3 schools I am interested in.

SUNY Farmingdale - The 4 required classes are English 101, Psychology 101, A&P1, A&P2

Nassau Community - English 101, Psychology 101, Any college math class, A&P 101

Queensborough - English 101, Psyhololgy 101, A&P1, Sociology 101

As you can see schools differ but they all have English, Psychology and A&P1 in common.

Some other classes you could take after you do the required four are: Microbiology, Chemistry, Speech, English 102, Child Development, and regular electives.

Some schools require an Ethics course in healthcare. Also, all schools require CPR certification for healthcare providers. One school I went looked into required Red Cross First Aid also. Pre-reqs are listed on the nursing website for each school. It will give you a quick idea as to what is needed for schools in your area.

I'm taking my prerequisites right now. I have to take Anatomy and Physiology I and II, Microbiology, College Algebra or higher math, English Composition I, a speech elective, a humanities elective, and development psychology.

We had to have the math and first A&P completed before we could even apply.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I have taken all the classes so far except for micro and chem. Between the two, which would you say is most needed? Or is it equally needed?

Depending on whether or not you took chem in high school and how long ago. You may not even need to take it depending on the school you are applying to. With some schools, as long as it was taken in a certain time frame, you don't have to take it. I'm in Phila so I'm not sure if this pertains to the schools in your state. I would say, micro is a must and every school requires it. Take micro but look into whether you should take chem or not. Good luck!

My program required a 5 unit Anatomy w/lab, 5unit physio w/lab, 5 unit micro w/lab, +chem as a pre-req to micro, plus all the usual English 1a, psych 1, Algebra, soc 1, humanities and something else I'm forgetting aha speech

In Portland, OR if you want to be an LPN you take the A&P I and II condensed coorifice for RN you take A&P I, II, and III, (In my case all five) micro, psychology of human development, trig, must be a CNA (Level2) (unique to this state) and have roughly a 3.5 GPA with a prior college degree to get in. Most community colleges have 700 applicants for 30 open spots. I have friends who have applied every year with 3.8/3.9 GPA plus all prerequisite coorifice work completed and still did not get in. As for me I bit the bullet and will start the LPN program this spring after which I will do the LPN to RN bridge program in CA where it ironically is much easier (with more schools to choose from) to become an RN.

I never in my life heard of a nursing program that requires you to have "a prior college degree to get in." That is just ridiculous. Not saying I don't believe you, but man, I would hate to go to your school.

Not sure why a 4 year old thread was resurrected but the only programs that require a previous degree are 2nd degree programs.

I'm not sure if it would help anyone but there are about 10 or so nursing programs in my area that I was interested in. So I made a spreadsheet of all the requirements for the schools on it helped me figure out what I should be taking. The only unusual requirements I've seen are ethics and abnormal psych.
