Would this hurt my chances at getting a new grad position?

I work 2 per diem jobs as a nursing assistant and am in nursing school. One at a very specialized surgery hospital that's all inpatient ortho mostly elective surgery related. The other is at a small regular hospital where I've worked on every floor.

My grades are not an issue at all, but I really hate my job at the smaller hospital. I don't want to give reasons as to bias your answers but would it hurt me to only have the specialized hospital experience going forward if I want to work in an ER (or regular medsurg unit)? I've worked about 8 months in the smaller hospital and about 3 months in the surgery one. I'll suck it up if it means I'll have a better shot at jobs in the future, but don't really want to keep it if it's not going to help me at all.

The job at the smaller hospital may help you but I doubt that it will hurt you to not have it, if that makes sense. Aide experience is aide experience, the care you do is relatively similar regardless of the floor because the scope of an aide is relatively limited. Doing VS or emptying a Foley is the same on inpatient ortho as it is on general med/surg, for example. My aide experience was adult med/surg for 3 months one summer and I've only ever worked pediatrics as a nurse.

Can you cross train to the smaller hospitals er? If so, that may give you a small foot up, particularly if you're applying to work in their er after graduation.

Otherwise, I honestly don't think it would make much difference. You're likely going to be doing the same things no matter what the setting--vitals, helping with mobilization, toileting.

Make sure you give a notice and leave in good standing and it shouldn't matter much.

If you can financially give up the smaller hospital, then it may be time to let it go. Things happen . It sounds like you have worked on all floors in that smaller hospital, so you do have an idea about the hospital. Do you want to work at the smaller hospital when you graduate? If you do, then I would stay and figure out if the reasons for not liking the hospital can be changed. If not, it may be time to move. If you do not plan on working at the smaller hospital, graciously give them appropriate notice, thank them for the experience and move on.

If you leave with good notice, it shouldn't hurt you at all. If you can tough it out and stay, it could help you though! I know that at a hospital I worked at filled their nursing staff with new grads who worked as nursing techs first. But many of them there will know you and your foot will be in that door should you choose to go that route. So, like I said earlier, if you leave in good standing, it shouldn't hurt you at all.
