I had been offered 2 very different positions, ED and home health. I decided to go with the ED position. It is something I know I want to do at some point in my career. I was set on that position and then this morning I was offered an outpatient surgery position. The pay for the positions are comparable, so that is not a factor. The hours would be much better with the outpatient surgery position, of course. ED is 11A-11P and every third weekend. I would love the no nights, weekends, holidays, etc that goes along with the outpatient surgery position, but I am just not sure that is the best decision. Would you choose a job based solely on the schedule? My heart says go with the ED position, but the difference in scheduling makes me really question what would be best.

If you feel strongly about one, take that one. But if you're open to both positions, I'd DEFINITELY choose the one with the better schedule! There's something to be said about a nice work schedule but if it's not what you want to do, why bother?

Thank you for the advice. It is not that I am not open to both positions, I just am drawn more to the environment of the ER versus Outpatient Surgery. A drawback of the Outpatient Surgery position is I have worked with one of the nurses in the department. She is a major backstabber and I have seen the damage she can do. I hate to weigh that in my decision, but it does make a difference. She may not last long there, but you never know. The schedule is tempting, but I don't think in this case it will be worth it.

There's a lot to weigh out when you're considering more than one position. The best thing that I can do is just sit down and write out a list of the pros and cons of each job and decide how important each of those things is to you. Just for me, personally, I love the environment in the ER and would choose there but that's just me! Chances are, you might encounter someone in the other position that is difficult to work with too, though! Most jobs will cause you to encounter someone difficult to work with.

No job is perfect and personalities will conflict at some point. Going into a situation where you know there are issues is probably not the wisest choice though. I agree with you about the ER environment. I am definitely more drawn to it.

I say go with what your heart says, but if you like both, go with the one with betters hrs/pay!!

Oh, without a doubt I'd go for the outpatient surgery position!!!! But that's just me, of course.

I also don't think that I would let the backstabbing person's presence sway me from a job that I would like to have. I mean, it isn't like the environment as a whole is like that, right? I would just try my darndest to avoid that person... though I'm a person who is particularly good at doing that. =)
