What have other nurses done that have freaked you out?

What have other peers done intentional/unintentional to freak you out? Good or bad. Happy or sad.

On my FIRST day as an LVN, (LTC) a res was screaming in her room as I was walking out to leave. I went in to see what was going on. She was having an anxiety attack and severe pain (post stroke). I pulled the call light, and no one came. Uggg.

So I peeked out the door and saw my CNA walking down the hall, and told him to come sit with res. I went down to get her a Xanax and a pain pill, well relief nurse was in the restroom, and relief CNA (with call light still going off) was sitting behind nurses station reading a newspaper. I told CNA to tell the nurse to get a Xanax and pain pill for res. She said OK. I go to relieve my CNA. Said goodbye to him, and stayed with res. after 10 minutes, CNA COMES INTO ROOM WITH XANAX AND MORPHINE PILL. She is soooooo shocked to see me still there, she hands me the pills and RUNS to the relief nurse. I could NOT BELIEVE WHAT I JUST SAW!!!!

(I did immediately call DON and tell what happened. Luckily, my CNA was still checking on another res, and saw the whole thing.--------they got a slap on the wrist! that was it!!!) :madface: :madface:

I worked in this HUGE ED in Houston and we had this small observation unit across the hall from the ED. One day they called a code in that area so I and the other charge nurse went running over there. When we arrived, the patient was just lying there and no one was doing CPR. Reggie, the nurse with me asked the tech who was standing there to start CPR and he said "I can't. My card expired".

!!! I'm not sure whether to say or !!!

I saw a nurse sniff and then lick her finger and exclaim... "Yep, it's Jevity"... she touched goop that was around the stoma of a G-tube.... I damn near stroked out

ok...i work in a peds office and i once heard a nurse (not a ma but a nurse) tell a patient that they should go to the local urgent care at 5 pm. now, it was 9 am when she told the patient parents this bit of information. i have worked in peds offices for 6 years and when someone has a child sick enough to go to a urgent care facility and not the office means something is serious and needs immediate attention. not to mention children go downhill quick. so i asked the nurse why she was sending the child to a urgent care when we had available appointments. she stated that the child (13 years) fell off the top of the family car (i have no idea why he was up there) and hit his head on the pavement. he was a little disoriented x 5 minutes and now was c/o blurred vision and a massive ha. the mom stated that he was no longer disoriented but was acting funny and was having trouble keeping his balance while walking.

now i might have been a first semester nursing student but i almost passed out. i told her to call the parent back and go the er asap. and this was her response “i know what i am doing! i have been a rn for years and let me tell you…unless the child is unconscious or gushing blood there is no emergency! there little head are made for this kind of stuff.”

so i called the parent back and told them to take the kid to the er. now this happened yesterday and i’m off the next two days so i am eager to know that happened to the child.

I'll tell ya. . . I think I have lost my appetite for the day! Let me print this out and put it on my fridge. Could be the latest diet trick for me.

Okay, I have a story for ya. . . . .

There was an agency nurse who would wait until the meal trays were all collected and placed back on the cart, and fix himself a USED plate of the residents LEFTOVERS!!! I don't even want to think about all the times I have seen them spit, vomit, or chew on something and spit it back out and nicely place it back on the plate.

Eeeek! Then he would go back for seconds! This was after he would raid the employee refrigerator to see if we brought anything for lunch.

He grossed me out so bad!!!

He wasn't there long though. He attempted to prevent me from contacting the Ombudsman after a fairly brutal patient vs. patient abuse (Res's glasses were smashed into her face by another res). He was so determined to not have to do the paperwork, he followed me around after I had stated I was calling the ombudsman to make sure I didn't touch a phone. However, I wrote that number down, and called immediatly after I had gone home. I also let them know about being prevented from calling earlier by that nurse. That was his last shift.

if someone flames you, just tune it out, because anyone who would criticize for that reason is an insensitive jerk. we all do things according to our individual timetables. i didn't marry until i was 37 and a nurse i worked with, planned a baby shower for me (at work, yet!!:angryfire) because she just assumed i must be pregnant, to be getting married then when i'd been single so long. we each have our own plan.

I once saw an aide throw a used lancet in the garbage. There were plenty of sharps containers around, including 1 attached to the med cart, 1 in the med room, and 1 in the resident's bathroom.

Some of the residents at my job have private non-medical Companions; basically Home Health Aides. The Companions are under strict orders to tell a nurse if the resident has an acute change in status, even if they're not sure something is wrong. Some are great, others tell us nothing.

One day I walked into a resident's room and asked the Companion about the resident, who was asleep in the chair. The companion replied "Oh, she had some chest pain a few hours ago, but it subsided." I almost fainted. Another didn't tell anyone when they same resident had a black BM. One had the nerve to shush me while I was taking to the resident, because she couldn't hear the TV!

I work with a nurse who refuses to auscultate lung sounds. She says she never learned it 30 years ago because LPNs didn't do it back then, and so she just doesn't understand and won't do them. I have come in more than once in the morning to a person with a cough, listened to their lungs , ordered chest xray and lo and behold they have pneumonia!
