uniforms are killing us

Nurses General Nursing

What do you all think of current nursing wear. it kills me to go up to a adult floor and see RN's wearing all these crazy looking tops with cartoons and teddy bears on them. personally i see why some of the public looks down to a nurse and is always wanting the DR. We look terrible. I think all floors should have set colors for each positon. RN's, LVN's, PCA's, it gives a sense of order. just wanted to know how others see it, because i just was looking at a web site for nursing uniforms, and i couldn't help but laugh at some of them.

bwahahaha!!!:rotfl:

I sometimes think it'd be better for nurses to go back to all white since you can't tell us from the Unit Clerks, PCT's, or housekeeping.

I think it's a vast conspiracy-administration encourages those scrubs because when everyone looks alike it seems as though there are plenty of nurses on the floor....

When I worked LTC, the residents really smiled and commented on the bright colors and different prints I wore. Now that I am hospital based, I really don't mind my navy scrubs. We can also wear white, but since Prince Charming moved me out to the country, I don't even buy white underwear anymore.:wink2:

At a meeting yesterday we received an updated dress code policy. The only changes were to remind people about nails, perfumes, hairstyles (nothing too out there) and mulitiple piercings. Before I get slammed, I am all for expressing individuality, but I still think professionalism and on the job should command respect. Save the spiky hair gel and 2 inch fingernails and 6 earrings for when you are off duty. Call me sentimental, but even though I've been a nurse 16 years, there is still a feeling of pride when dressing in my uniform :D

I think the root of this is a hidden LPN vs. RN issue....:D or students vs. allnurses....:D

I agree 100% with this post. We need to stop picking on individual uniform choices and address these TRULY unprofessional traits of certain nurses/ancillary staff. NOTHING turns me off MORE than perfume, cigarette smoke smells, long nails, loud hair and rude behavior. NO Uniform can cover up for that sort of unprofessionalism or make it worse, IMO!

Very well stated Debbie! ^5!

The perfume issue has really gotten out of hand at our facility. (Along with the cologne for the docs and some of them are the worse offenders!). Nothing like having patients (and the several nurses) suffer an acute asthma attack because of someone's perfume.

One of our younger docs (mid 30's) has a couple scrub shirts that are colorful enough to put some of the nurses' scrubs to shame. He says that he has received many compliments from his patients.

We even have a couple of docs that make rounds in jeans a couple of times a week. These two docs are two of the most competent, professional, dedicated physicians I know. They are well liked and respected by their peers and by their patients.

I think the variety of uniforms actually improves the morale of the unit! Just my .02.

I like the prints and various stuff. I would hate to have to wear all white or just one color. I am a big fan of boot cut pants. I would love it if someone invented a pair of boot cut scrubs, and lower-waisted, at that. Somehow I don't think that will happen anytime soon.

I don't really have an opinion either way... "To each his own!"

Call me old fashioned, but I prefer wearing a crisp white uniform. My sneakers are all white and sometimes I wear white stocking (usually the circulation support ones). I even was asked by a few nurses one day if I was a student. How sad! However, I do like wearing print warm-up jackets. I always get complimented on how professional I look(even with the jacket). As far as cartoon jackets...is it considered age appropriate if the cartoon is Betty Boop?????? That WAS a popular cartoon in the 1930's. And what about "I Love Lucy" jacket.....again 1950's.

I guess we all have our own tastes and we're all going to dress different. :)

Sorry to those who think those printed tops are great. I can't get over the childish, pajama party look of them. Come on guys, how serious can you be taken with baby bunnies jumping all over your lapel!

Catherine

I am a good nurse. I give my patients the best care that I know how to provide. My uniforms are always clean and bright. How can you judge someone's ability and knowledge based on the print of a darn scrub shirt?

I really believe nursing has more pressing issues to deal with than white vs. colored print uniforms.

Have you seen the scrubs with flared legs? Don't know about the waist, but they're kinda like boot-cut pants. :)

Peaches makes a boot-cut type pant, not lower waisted though;

god i'm feelin' old..ok..i have no prob whatsoever with printed scrubs. unsure about bootcut...think that's toing the edge...but i think low-rider scrub pants would be totally inappropriate and unprofessional. work is not the place to be sporting clothes to flash a tummy or a section of lower back skin!!!!
