Our iv team uses betadine. Take care and best wishes with your surgery on Monday.

From NY and I use betadine to start the IV's...
Although I have seen nurses use the betadine and then the alcohol. I dunno why!

we do alcohol for all sticks unless it's a medical etoh that could be used in court. for those we use betadine.

We are now using this new scrub pad that is included with the iv start kits, that allows us to keep an iv in for 96 hours instead of the 72 hour with alcohol. The scrubbers are also packaged in seperate containers if you're just needing one for central line blood draws or drawing blood cultures. I can't remember what the scrub is called, but when I go back to work Monday night I will look and get back to y'all.

we have those skin prep packages..."chlor-prep".....that we use for access to c-lines.

The new recommendation is for use of chlorhexadine or the chlor pads for IV starts from the Intervenous nurses society. We still use betadine. I always ask before I use it if someone has a known allergy. Our hospital will be switching to chlor-prep pads soon. Betadine is so messy.

We use the little betadine pads and let sit for 5 min., then the alch. swab pad ... protocol for our dialysis sticks.
