Son In Hospital

Hi everyone, My 15 yr old son is in the hospital. He has been epiliptic since birth. His seizures have never really been well controlled. Until Sunday a.m. he has not had a problem with status epilipticus for several yrs. When I got home from work Easter morning I found him in bad shape. Hubby said he had gotten him up with a hard seizure about an hour earlier but then seemed to be in his usual post ectal state. When I found him his AP was 150 and resps were 60 and very shallow, T 99.0 axillary. He was very cyanotic I listened to his chest with my steth and could here very loud moist gurgling in his left lobe. We called 911. By the time we reached our local ER they had to intebate him. They flew him by life flight to a bigger hosp. He came off the respirator this a.m. He is much improved but I am still worried. He is very confused and cannot seem to understand us or the staff. He speaks but not in complete sentences like he used to. When he does speak the words do not form a sentence so we cant understand him either. He gets very frustrated and extremely SOB. His resps are very erratic between 22 rarely to 44 fairly often. He is on O2 at 4ltr per nc. Whenever they try to turn it down his oO2 sat drop and they bump it back up. I am scared. Anyone have any thoughts. Oh yea very important detail. He did aspirate during one of the many seizures before arriving in Toledo. They did a procedure where they went down with a scope and tried to basically clean out the lungs. Left lobe atelectisis(sp) OK I think that is it, sorry this was such a long post.

I'm sorry to hear about your son. Must be really hard to watch.

No ideas about what he is going thru now but I have a friend who had poorly controlled seizures and she has better control now with a vagus nerve stimulator. Might want to look into it.

So sorry to hear of your son's seizures. I wonder if he was a little O2 deprived during the seizure so he has some memory loss? I will keep y"all in my prayers and God bless your family.

Angelbear, I have little to offer except prayer for you and your family. I will be thinking of ya'll, keep us posted when you have time.

'"Angel bear my son had seizures for about 10 years and luckily he outgrew it so the Dr. said.My mom had them, so did I and so did my sister. I know how hard it is to watch your child have them. I can't say I know how you feel with his verbal language ability decreasing or changing but I can say you are in my thoughts are prayers.

Hugs,

Angelbear - it's early days yet don't panic too much. I know you want answers NOW but be patient, wait, it is too early yet to tell anything. Without knowing the all facts of your son's condition I have seen patients in ICU post-extubation who have decreased attention span and verbal skills simply because of a combination of residual sedation and ICU syndrome. He MAY have some cerebral oedema causing problems but the fact that he is awake, aware is good.

Don't panic and remember expect the worst but hope for the best. In other words it is OK to be worried while still maintaining hope.

My prayers and wishes go out to you.

Neuro isn't my specialty, but I do want to send Get Well Wishes!

Do you know if they've done a head CT or MRI, etc?

Did he receive a lot of sedation while on the vent?

I'm no neuro expert, but I know sometimes it can take awhile for someone with a head injury to recover back to their normal self...and it sounds like he's had some kind of injury possibly due to oxygen deprivation...or it could just be effects of sedation...or he could still be hypoxic from his spo2 fluctuating and from having aspirated and having atelectasis. Just some possibilities...have the docs said what they think about it?

I'll be praying for your son and your family...

Wishing your son a speedy recovery, hugs to you and your family. We will keep your family in our prayers.
