Shoe Question

Nurses General Nursing

There was a thread on here not long ago about comfortable shoes, and I noticed that several people mentioned that they wore clogs.

The hospital that employs me has a dress code that specifically excludes clogs, or any other open back shoe. I don't work in the hospital, I'm a FNP in the clinic and wear street clothes, but last week we did some screenings at a school and someone from the hospital saw I had open-back canvas shoes on and reported me. :( I'm getting a note from my doctor that I can wear whatever is comfortable, as I'm diabetic with some mild neuropathy and have other foot problems as well).

My question is, does anybody know of any reason why clogs or open back shoes should *not* be worn in any clinical areas? It seems to me to be based on not liking how they look! I have a pair of Anywears that are super comfortable, and they were recommended by an OR nurse manager in another hospital!

My personal feelings on a dress code is that if we are clean, neat, and not too short/tight/low cut, then we should be treated like grownups. Thanks! :)

I wear clogs and I work in the OR...do not have a problem keeping them on my feet, and have not had a problem running for an emergency...the name of the clogs I wear are ANYWEARS.

Guess after you get use to wearing them they are like any other shoe. Our facility changed the dress code after so many nurses complained because they could not wear clogs, so now its ok...

One hospital required that cloggs had either a heel strap or a high lip on the back.

Personally I wear clogs with a heel strap (not required where I work) It insure the shoe stays on my foot and clogs are cool. You have great air circulation and your feet do not get hot and the sweat can actually evaporate (better for my feet and better for the life of my shoe)

The guys in our ER do wear clogs - at least some of them anyway. Will look into clogs - had been thinking about it for awhile and really appreciate everyone's input. thanks...judi

Guys DO wear clogs. A couple male doctors who did our OB deliveries wore em all the time. ICK! all that blood and fluid on the socks. No way would shoe protectors help...i cannot fathom wanting to wear clogs in OB. Really, it's so odd to me.

I agree with whats been said....safety in keeping your feet completely covered. I tried to wear them too, but they kept slidding off or made me loose my balance. The friction (when trying to walk fast, since you dare not run in them!) also gave me horrible calouses.

I want a pair of those nurse shoes with the springs. Does anyone know the name of the company?

I wear the white and blue slip - on" Skechers"--they are sooooo comfy-- they come up really high in the front, and i don't have any trouble---i mean , everybody has been wearing clogs and those crazy rubber looking clogs ffooorreeevveeeeerrrrrr in the hospital here---- go figure!!!!! I did know a nurse that sued and made a fortune, though, when she sued the hospital for someone running into the back of her Achilles with the cross-part bottom part of an IV pole during a code and it severed her achilles----now she can ONLY wear clogs!~Kinda ironic, seeein that now she has no heel protection at all!!!!!

Gotta have shoes that you can RUN in PRN.
