Re: Movies with Nurses

  1. Hi all. I was just wondering if any of you have seen or can recommend a movie with an example of good (or bad) nursing or medical care in it, such as "Patch Adams." I need to review one for a clinical judgment class.

There's always the classic "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest". Nurse Ratchit and how NOT to be a nurse!

What about John Q??? I don't know if it's out on video yet though....although I reckon it would be a good one to do your piece on.

    Ummm....Girl, Interrupted...although that's mainly psych stuff.

If there's any more that I can think of, I'll throw them up here.

Pearl Harbour has a nurse but I don't know how much that would hell... the nurse is playing 'hookie' with the patient... atleast that was what I could tell from the show....

South Pacific, has nurses but they seem to spend all their time singing on the beach.............

how about Doc Hollywood? Tough nurse at the hospital, asinine doc comes to realize patients are people, etc.

Damien the Leper Priest, true story of the Catholic priest who was sent to the leper colony (as a priest, not a patient) in Hawaii in the 1800's, and had his course of leprosy documented. Excellently done film.

Good luck with your review. My Nursing Management course we had to read a management styles book, everyone chose the short supposedly humerous one. Because I'm the only one that wrote a less than ecstatic review of it, I got a lousy grade. My prof said, "too bad so many people reviewed it, so I knew what it was really like", I told her the review was supposed to be MY opinion, but didn't get anywhere with her. And you know what? 20+ years later, no one has EVER asked me about what books I read for management styles!

There is a movie called "The Doctor" with William Hurt. He is a very arrogant ENT who becomes a patient himself. It's about his experiences and the steps he takes to make things better for patients.
Also, what about the movie "MASH 4077" that led to the series MASH?

They made us watch The Doctor in Nursing school! It was an excellent movie!

Why didn't I think of The Doctor??? Good choice! I actually think they should force MDs to watch it just before they graduate or

My all time favourite is the English Patient because it has yummy Joseph Fienes in it.

No, no you silly girl, that one has Ralph Fienes in it, mind you any movie with either brother in is to die for.

"Meet the Parents" w/ Ben Stilller playing the nurse opposite Bob Deniro as the father of the girlfriend is both good and bad. It's good in my opinion b/c millions of people saw this movie in which the lead male role played a nurse. It's bad b/c it does not portray this nurse in a good light @ all (all the stereotypical "male" nurse type stuff)

I really liked Phillip Seymor Hoffman as the private home nurse to Jason Robards dying of CA in "Magnolia". I like him as an actor and again millions of people see a man playing a nurse.

I guess I can be your reference for males as nurses in the movies.

A good one is Nurses on the Line. It stars Lindsay Wagner and Robert Loggia. A pretty good flick.
