Hello my fellow nurses, I got a question especially for all the PRN folks. I recently work in a hospital but as PRN and I already got call off more than I anticipated. Is this normal?

Low census seems to come in waves. After that is over, then the phone rings a lot asking if you want to work.

Hopefully, some nurses will be taking summer vacations and you will get cancelled less.

I was scheduled to work but still called off on my shift? How is that possible? Maybe I am new to this PRN world and learning how it operates :)

Uaually prns/per diems are first call off because they dont have a guaranteed numbers of hours per pay period.

if someone has to be cut at the last minute we cut the PRN folks. That is why many prn nurses have more than one employer.

This is the nature of working PRN. If you need steady work, best to look for a position with set hours.

I am home right now because I got the 0530 phone call. Overtime and PRN staff are the first ones called off or floated to other units.

You might want to reread your employee handbook about PRN staff and what is expected.

You may be "scheduled" in case they have a call off. Staffing office is padding the available staff to make their life easier.

Work with the manager of your favorite unit .. to avoid this happening in the future.
