i can't be to specific about what happened this weekend at work . but i'll tell you about it the best i can...

a nurse i work with had 5 patients in a row and one across the hall. the nurse did alot of talking and wind bagging that day , and not much else i think..... well she gave report to the oncoming shift and the pt had accu checks.... the nurse coming on was handed a accucheck sheet by the out going nurse. the nurse for the new nurse went in the room and the daughter stated " there has not been a nurse here much all day, and why didn't my mother get her pills? mind you this pt dosen't speak english and there is a family member all the time with her.... the oncoming nurse said she ( out going nurse ).. did do accuchecks here is the sheet right here and see it was done. the daughter said that was a lie and she has been there on and off all day and those accuchecks were not done ...., and there was family because someone is always there. the pt's family member came in and said " come now to think of it my aunt didn't get her pills or iv antibotics today." so that confirmed the daughters suspions...

well the charge nurse was called and the pixus was checked and no meds were given for 32 hours and they printed off a copy of the meds give for that patient. the mar was signed as all the meds were given and the accucheck sheet was signed as done.

i am in shock because this nurse is a excellent nurse and i don't know why she would do that. i don't want legal advice but i just want to vent. i guess it made me sick to my stomach , i work hard all day and i am in and out of pt's rooms all the time. so sad, hope she dosen't loose her license over this . but if it were my mother i wold sue the hospital if this is proven correct.

thank you all in advance for listening... :angryfire

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but you did say the report showed no meds given for 32 hours! That's more than 1 nurse's shift isn't it? Unless you have other information not given here I would be more likely to suspect mechanical error than neglect. If that 1 nurse had been on duty for the past 32 hrs, I'm surprised there isn't more wrong than some missed meds!:twocents:

.....

I once worked with a nurse who routinely signed off on accuchecks not done and meds not given and other tasks not done. Additionally, she liked to sleep all night. No wonder that people wondered why others were chosen to be laid off. To this day, almost 20 years later, the same nurse is reportedly there sleeping away on night shift and falsifying her charting.

You should have also been able to pull up the past results of blood sugars on the glucometer. I know its used for multiple patients, but if she did do them, then the times and numbers in the history should match with what the nurse had on her accucheck sheet. Agree with the questionable missing 32 hours....pharmacy also has a computer sheet r/t the pixxus. (reads a little different than the one you print on the pixxus.)

:uhoh3: wow!!! 32 hours is very long time for any patient not to get meds. so i am wondering if there was some kinda error in the system or there was more than 1 nurse that signed off, charted, etc on the records that didn't give the meds either.

within 32 hours no way one nurse worked the entire time. i see risk management getting invloved. sothing isn't right about this situation.

makes you wonder why the family didn't say something sooner? just my :twocents:.

i have gone in pts rooms before and family member would either be sleeping, in the bathroom or gone down stairs to get food/snacks and when i return later they would say mom/dad/ didn't get so-in-so. then i would investigate and come to find out they were not there, were sleeping or whatever .

again, some thing is not right with this picture!

the glucometer should have the dates and times of last accu-checks. also pharmacy would have a report of meds that were pulled, sent for said pt.

Oh man, this kind of stuff steams me. there is no excuse for nurses not to do their jobs and there is especially no excuse for making things up. What a maroon...

I worked with a nurse one night who had been pulled out of L&D to work with us on post-partum. she was mad and pretty much complained and slammed drawers and stomped around all night. She had a patient who was going to be C-sectined in the morning. I don't know whether she checked on the girl or not, but she charted "7am--pt up, performing self-care. Fetal heart tones strong, fetus moving." The only thing was, when L&D came to get the patient AT 6AM, they couldn't get fetal heart tones and the baby was dead! Saddest thing I've ever witnessed. Not only that, but the nurse went back and altered the chart! AAAAAAAARGGH!

oh the pt was only there from the ER from the night before, so she got meds in the er and it doesn't show on our pixus... so she was fine that way ... just the one day shift

Or so you thought...

amen... i think thats what shocked me ,, i would never of believed it if the nurse coming off shift did not tell me personally what happened and how embarrassed she was.. she came up and told me all about it . i think she was shocked just like i was. i still can't believe it... we'll have to see what happens from the investagation. it was turned into the charge nurse who turned it into the manager. we'll see if she was employed next weekend. do you think she will still have a job? if i did that i wouldn't have a license..
