Online application status being reviewed but job filled!!!!! 😡

Nurses General Nursing

Has this happened to anyone else?? Maybe I can get some feedback or advice. I'm so frustrated! I am a new graduate nurse RN which I WAS very excited about... That is until I began the grueling job hunt:no:. I precepted at this one particular hospital and loved it. I did a great job, (thought my preceptor was/is truly a bad person) I noticed there were two job openings on the unit! I was so excited I applied online and emailed the unit Manager personally to express interest. Anyways she said the May not be hiring new grades. I thanked her. A month and a half later my online application status says "being reviewed by new manager" my hopes shot up! I was so excited!!! I emailed her again to reiterate my interest. And excitedly waited a response and possibly a request for an interview. Then I got the response to my email. "Thanks for your interest but the positions have been filled. I will contact hr to take them down" I was literally crushed. I wanted that job so badly! I loved the hospital, but they obviously don't want me. :(. My question is.. Why update my status and get my hopes up for a position that is "filled" that's heartbreaking and cruel. Any opinions?!?

Probably is an automated update, not manually entered. They probably did truly send your resume to the manager, but by then she had decided on an internal candidate. It happens. Lines get crossed between HR and the floor all the time. Sometimes I have been the last person to find out a position has been filled.

Filled by someone else is only surpassed by hearing nothing and then a couple of days or weeks go by and the job announcement is reposted. Par for the course. Don't let it bother you. At least you got a reply to your inquiries.

Thanks for the reply! I guess that does make sense. I guess I as just so heart broke and overall frustrated with the entires job search. I am greatfull to have gotta. Some type of response. I have filled out a few hundred application and have only gotten two emails responses saying no go. That being one of them. So I understand also what it's like to fill out apps only to get no response at all. I'm feeling discouraged about nursing, and I haven't even started lol give us new grads a chance!!!!!

So... Who decides who gets the job? HR? Unti maneger? HR looks at the apps and sends them to the unit maneger as options and she untimely does what she wants??

In my experience, all HR does is forward resumes that are complete and include the requirements the posted job has. If the manager in charge of the unit looking for the employee prefers one applicant over another, of COURSE it is up to the manager to make the final decision. It's his/her unit, after all, and a manager without ability to hire isn't much of a manager, right? Think of it this way: who is better to review and compare the appropriateness for anyone to fill a nursing job than the nurse responsible for that unit? HR usually understands what the position wants; the hiring manager knows WHO the position should best go to from the pile of resumes/applications.

HR can nix an applicant once approved for hire, though, if the applicant doesn't follow through on pre-employment testing (physicals, drug screens, competency exams, etc). If a candidate doesn't measure up as an employee, period, then HR can (and does) overrule the hiring of an applicant.

But if you're asking "whose decision is it to hire", that would be the manager who is responsible for your spot in their schedule :)

The manager makes decision whom to interview, screen and hire. HR is only managing emails/paperwork. Technically, they can nic/hold a resume or keep another one out till manager remembers that particular candidate. It is not what they supposed to do but it happens anyway.

You really need to learn how not to get sooooo excited/devastated about things, you have a long road ahead, so donot make it a rollercoaster.

Well I was curious bc the first time I talked to her she said "HR wouldn't allow her to hire anymore new grads at the moment" so that's why I was a little confused. And yeah I really haven't never gotten SO excited about any of the others. Just this bc I seemed to have a really good chance, with my app being reviewed, several open spots, and experience on that floor. But oh well. Moving on I guess. To fill out more pointless online apps and check a incorrect status update :dead: thank you for the info!!! This is my very first post on this site! I have read posts for years and finally decide to join! Love it!

And they still may not hire new grads. If the system is automated, just the act of pulling resumes to review could have changed your status. They could have pulled 10 or 100 at a time, then they had to go through the process of elimination.

I had one large company email me back 3 months after I applied to tell me sorry they hired another candidate. I did not even remember what job I had applied for and I certainly did not interview....ha.

FYI, the pointless online apps are only pointless until one of those companies nibbles and then hires you. No apps...no nibble.

Good luck in your job search!!!
