Offered an MDS/ADON position as new grad....

Hi, everyone! :) I had an interview today for an MDS/ADON position and I was offered the job on the spot. I interviewed with the DON & the administrator, both of whom seemed to really like me.

I am nervous!

So, for any RNs that are currently or have ever been in an MDS position and/or an ADON/DON position can you please shed some light for me? :)

I know all about the positions and what MDS requires, etc.... just looking for advice.

I know the company will provide me extensive training, but should I take an assessment class anyway?

Honestly, I'd be wondering what the heck was going on with the facility to do something like that....please don't be offended, as it's not a comment directed at you personally (as I obviously don't know you) but this SCREAMS at me "WHAT ON EARTH??" As in "what's wrong with the place that they can't get anyone experienced to either take the job or stay at the job?"

The main position as MDS coordinator. The other, small part, is ADON. This particular facility does not need to run with an ADON because it is fairly small, only 65-70 patients, and some are only short term care cases.

They do not even really use the term ADON, I am going to be assisting the DON when she needs help and being on call (possibly, if they feel I can handle it) every other weekend and 2 or 3 days a week.

I've been in health care for 6 years, not that it's forever, but I've seen how places run and this place seems to really have their heads on straight. In addition to my RN license, I also have a degree in Health Care Administration, which really comes in handy for such a position. I have also held positions that required me to be responsible for up to 70 people, including hiring and firing them.

ADON=Secretary

Exactly what I was thinking... I'm not concerned about being dubbed the "ADON"... I'm looking for advice about the MDS position.

jenny, is that your face in all your postings? FYI not wise, no not wise at all.

I never translated ADON into "secretary"; it's the Assistant Director of Nursing in my experience, which also translated into "the boss" when the boss isn't there. Which was my concern.

The degree in Health Care Administration is your strongest point, which you hadn't mentioned in your initial post. Still, I'd have the concern about a new grad (read: zero RN experience) deciding if someone needs to be admitted to the hospital, etc. But maybe your facility is set up differently than what I've seen. If so....I'm sure someone will be able to help you.

ADON=Secretary

At my old LTC, ADON="Cannon Fodder." It was the person the owner (Pretendtocare) frog-marched out of the building when state came by and viewed the carnage wrought from the owner's criminal staffing policies.

Unless you have some experience as an LPN, you are setting yourself up for alot of grief.

Even with experience, you are treading into turbulent water.

Why do they want to hire you on the spot? It sounds kind of desperate- particularly for a pivotal position given someone who is fresh off the school bus.

I am not trying to sound like am demeaning you or the opportunity- it just sounds like a play to land you in a circumstance that is for no one's benefit but their's ultimately.
