I am a nursing student in need of some nurses' opinions. If you could answer these questions and then at the end add your opinion of the media's image of nurses that would be amazing!!!! Thanks - :nurse:

1. Has the movie industry created a sterotype of nurses? If so what?

2. Do you think the movie industry has had a positive or negative effect of

the perfessionalism of a nurse? Why?

3. In the movies, are the characters the nurses portray supportive or

leading? Why do you think this is so?

4. Do the nurses perform skills they are trained to perform or are the

"slaves" to the physician?

5. Are nurses, in the movies, generally portrayed as males or females?

6. When in need of help, does a nurse turn to a fellow colleage or to a

physician or other male character?

7. When performing activities in a movie, is a nurse harmful or helpful to

their patient?

8. In the movies, do nurses uphold custom beside mannors?

9. Has the movie industry's portrayal of nurses affected the way you as a

person see nurses today?

10. Do you think the movie industry's image of nursing has had an affect on

the relationship between the nurse and their patient? IF so how?

What kind of class is this for? Are you putting together your own survey for presentation, or did your instructor send you out to interview "nurses"? I'm curious about what our answers are going to do for you, the student. Within the framework of the assignment, how are our views about how nurses are portrayed in the media going to possibly help you develop your own feelings about nurses?

In all of my years in school, I've never been asked to do a widespread poll of nurse opinions. (Even in my *very* favorite class.. "Current issues in Modern Nursing") What I did do was log major amounts of library time, so that my papers and homework assignments were supported by peer reviewed literature - as per the professor's expectations.

Not trying to *eat* you, just trying to understand why all these questions have been posted here.

I think the subject of the media's portrayal of nurses is all overblown hype.

We could indict them on how they portray Dads, Moms, Housewives, Interns, Detectives, Lawyers, Italians, Pool Boys . . . . .

It is just tv . . . . time for zoning out and not for intellectual enrichment.

Find the nursing advocacy group on the internet...they have a lot of interesting things to say about your topic.

Sometimes people post here to get answers to their homework instead of looking things up themselves. So that is why people asked you to clarify your assignment.

Why not introduce yourself a little, so that maybe you will get some answers to your interview questions? Its really a nice group here! :)

These questions are for a perspective class. I had to research the topic to create the questions. My teacher wants us to survey a group of people and I wanted to survey the nursing population to see how the feel about the subject she assigned me. The questions are just a small part to a ten page paper and power point on media and nursing. I just wanted to get a view on how nurses in the field now, I tried to go to a local hospital and ask the nurses on duty, but it was really difficult for a lot of them to find time to answer my questions without disrupting the job at hand, so I figured I would try a nursing forum because I could reach a more diverse population. I really appreciate your time. Thank you - :)

Here's a link to a book by Suzanne Gordon (author of Nursing Against the Odds) that addresses this subject. The book is called "From Silence to Voice." It's a good read, if you have the time.

I believe the Media in general has presented an unreal view of what nurses do.

1. Has the movie industry created a sterotype of nurses? If so what?

nurses are used for simple tasks

2. Do you think the movie industry has had a positive or negative effect of

the perfessionalism of a nurse? Why?

The professionalism of a nurse has not been portrayed properly when a 1st year resident gets better recognition than a nurse with 10+ years of experience.

3. In the movies, are the characters the nurses portray supportive or

leading? Why do you think this is so?

Nursing characters are supportive, most people don't really know what nurses do and the general public has a pre-conceived notion of nurses as subservient so they just go with that.

4. Do the nurses perform skills they are trained to perform or are the

"slaves" to the physician?

Nurses seem to just follow direction in movies and on TV shows and I have never had an MD at bedside help me find a vein for IV insertion or hold a patients leg for a foley for that matter. On many series and movies the doc guides the nurse. Oh geeze, get real.

5. Are nurses, in the movies, generally portrayed as males or females?

Females of course

6. When in need of help, does a nurse turn to a fellow colleage or to a

physician or other male character?

We are seeing more female doctors so not always a male character but the nurse seems to ask for guidance from doctors in movies.

7. When performing activities in a movie, is a nurse harmful or helpful to

their patient? The nurse is most always helpful, except in one of my favorite movies "One flew over the Cucoos Nest" Nurse Ratchet did not protray the majority of nurses.

8. In the movies, do nurses uphold custom beside mannors?

Nurses seem to rush out of the room or 'scene' quickly to allow for the drauma of the doctor or the lover or the family to take over. The nurse returns after the drama ends.

person see nurses today? Nope

10. Do you think the movie industry's image of nursing has had an affect on

the relationship between the nurse and their patient? IF so how?

Yes it has, it portrays nurses as not in charge of their patients care which is why patients ask for their doctors to talk to them again on most issues. Patients are better educated on health issues most of the time so the nurse needs to spend more time at bedside explaining medications and treatments to patients and families. Better nurse patient ratios would help with these issues in the long run. Realistically we need to add each active family member as a patient in our ratios.
