okay here is my problem. i had a job interview at long term care facility last thursday and i was okayed by don during my interview to work there. five days later i still havent heard from the human resources office to let me know when the orientation is going to be and if i need to do pre-employment physicals before i attend orientation. so i called human resources office today and she curtly told me that she is still doing reference check and she will call me. my question is does reference checks take this long and dont i have a right to know whether or not they are going to hire me? from my previous experiences i know some companies just dont call after interview to let them know they are not interested in hiring them. how am i suppose to know if i should just wait or start looking for other jobs? i had few phone calls who wants to interview me.

is it rude to call them and inquire them if they are not going to hire me so i can start looking for other jobs? i appreciate for any advices.

Yes, references can take awhile, sometimes it is waiting for the reference to call back, where the hold up is. If I were you I would keep my options open, go to other interviews, see what is out there, you might be surprised and find something just as good or better. Best of luck!!

a few points ...

1. of the 5 days between thursday and today, 2 of them were the weekend.

2. don't assume that reference-checking commenced the minute that you completed your interview.

3. the people that you name as references are not always available the exact minute that they are contacted.

if this facility is interested in hiring you, they will check your references and then contact you. some places check the references of all candidates, some only check the top 2 or 3 candidates that emerge after personal interviews. give it some time. in the meantime, you are certainly free to also pursue other employment leads.

my question is does reference checks take this long and dont i have a right to know whether or not they are going to hire me?

reference checks do take this long. not just reference checks either. after we 'hire' someone we not only check the references, we check the license and perform the background check. the background check can take up to 2 weeks sometimes where we are at.

as far as a right to know if they are going to hire you... no. you have no right but to practice your own due diligence. interviewing with several employers is always a good idea. choices are always a good thing.

Reference checks can take some time. In the meantime, keep your options open and continue interviewing with others. It would be horrible if you waited around and turned down interviews only to find out they are not going to hire you. You would have wasted time and lost on other potential employers.

I remember once, I got hired at a job as a psych tech, started working and two years later, I had to go to personnel for some reason unrelated to this topic. One of their employees came out and asked me about a place that I wrote on my application and said that they didn't receive a response from them. In my head, I felt that if they were that concerned about it, they would have contacted me sooner than two years, and I had already been working for them for that long, so, why bother, now? Never heard about it again, and worked for 12 years at this psych hospital with no real problems.

I would certainly investigate other options, but if I don't hear from them within 2-4 weeks, there is nothing wrong in my opinion to call them again if nothing else pops up more interesting.

My experience has been; Don't wait around! If you really want that job, take other interviews,It's murphys law, everyone will want you at once!!!!! It's like if you are waiting for an important phone call, you must be in the bathtub so the phone will ring! sue
