Jimmy Kimmel Thanks Nurses Who Saved His Infant Son's Life

Jimmy and his wife Molly welcomed their second child, a precious baby boy named William John Kimmel, on Friday, April 21, 2017 at Cedars-Sinai Hospital. He appeared to be a normal healthy baby, until about 3 hours after he was born a very attentive nurse heard a murmur as she was doing assessments. Murmurs are common in newborns, but she also noticed he "was a bit purple". Another nurse in NICU checked him too and notified the doctor. Jimmy was terrified as the number of doctors, nurses, and equipment filled the room. A pediatric cardiology surgeon was called in. An echocardiogram revealed that baby Billy had a birth defect called Tetrology of Fallot with pulmonary atresia and would require surgery. Billy and Jimmy traveled by ambulance to Children's Hospital of Los Angeles to undergo a 3-hour surgery to open his heart valve. Although the surgery was a success, he will require another surgery in about 6 months to close the hole in his heart.

Jimmy is so thankful to the astute nurse who first noticed something was wrong and jumped into action. He thanked her by name as well as the rest of the team at the two hospitals.

This is such a good reminder as we go into Nurses Week that nurses are so important. Many times they are the first line of defense for the safety of patients. Never underestimate your value as a nurse.

In this video, Jimmy is very emotional as he shares this scary story of what happened to little Billy.

Someone should send this repeatedly to every Senator and Congress person. I would say Trump as well but unless it's a tweet he probably wouldn't notice it. Make the powers that be think again about eliminating chances for families to save their children by having health insurance even for preexisting conditions.

Yep. Like they say-ONLY a nurse.

Why is there a post such as this on every social media about this video? Preexisting conditions were before the Trump era. And if you're following, preexisting conditions are currently covered under Obamacare, which Trump has yet to repeal. And further, in his attempt to appeal Obamacare, he supports coverage for preexisting conditions.

Actually NuGuyNurse2b ... whether or not the current Republican legislation actually supports the coverage of pre-existing conditions is a matter of debate. Many people claim it only pays "lip service" to the idea of coverage, but leaves it wide open to the states to define what type of coverage is provided and at what cost. Many experts believe that states will be free to offer only coverage that is prohibitively expensive for many of the people who need it most.

That's the whole point. Regardless about what Trump and the bill's sponsors say about wanting people with pre-existing conditions to be covered, the actual legislation does not provide any mechanism or guidelines as to what type of coverage would be available and how that coverage would be paid for -- leaving it wide open to the states to provide essentially "fake" coverage.

Because the preexisting conditions portion of the ACA has been a source of contention recently as certain Congress members (the Freedom Caucus) initially would not vote for the ACA replacement to be pushed forward without the repeal of Title One provisions mandated in the ACA. Among these provisions was the preexisting condition mandate. Regardless of what the ACA currently covers and the promises that have been made to keep the provision in the future, there are a good number of people in powerful positions that would like to see it done away with. It is completely understandable that people are bringing attention to it given current events.

Thank you Jimmy Kimmel for taking such a painful situation and using it to highlight the plight of many people who would be in a tragic position if they were to lose insurance coverage due to not qualifying or a pre-existing condition. I remember having patients that were born prematurely or with congential conditions and had continuing needs. Their parents had health insurance, but the child's pre-existing conditions were excluded. These folks ended up filing for bankruptcy. It cannot be left up to states to determine if insurance companies will provide for pre-exsisting conditions. Already some states have rejected funds offered through ACA for their poor. It would send a real message if doctors and hospitals refused to bill insurance companies for the care provided to politicians and make them pay cash up front. Let them feel the stress that others feel. Then when they vote they can have a reference point. Of course this would be considered unethical, right?

Jimmy Kimmel also did something that occurs too infrequently. Individual nurses were acknowledged and thanked for their expertise and interventions which made a difference between life and death. We all benefit from this public shout out.

I pray that the Kimmel's son makes a speedy recovery and enjoys a long and happy life and the family find strength from all of us in the nursing community.

Nurses must educate themselves about healthcare finance and public health issues. Find out who the payors are, how much care actually costs and how those costs are distributed. How can we help our fellow citizens (not counting volunteer/mission work). What is our role in reducing costs? Then participate in the political process. Whichever side you're on, you can do something positive.

Thanks to nurses who never stopped paying attention! I hope Jimmy's son gets a full recovery as he undergoes all other required surgeries. Thanks Jimmy for noticing the diligence of that nurse who did a thorough assessment rather than go through the short cut! BRAVO

What a wonderful, heartfelt tribute to the nurses who cared for his son. As a PP said, we usually get lumped into "the rest of the staff," but Jimmy took the time to make sure he knew the names of the nurses who helped care for his son.

It's good to know that we are more than nameless faces to some. Thanks Jimmy for recognizing the skillful nurses who made a difference in Billy's life.

Lets all remember also what all David Lettermen did for nursing. After his open heart surgery in his first show back on air he not only stated that it was the nurses who saved his life but had all of his ICU nurses on the show. He did not have any of his doctors on stating these nurses were my saviours.

Such a touching story and so sweet how he names so many of the healthcare providers involved. Nurses are truly a blessing to so many people and I feel blessed to soon be a part of that.

However, while I am glad that the funding for NIH wasn't reduced (although I'm sure there is waste that could be cut) it's embarrassing that he has to use any circumstances to throw our President under the bus. NIH does a lot of good but they are a biomedical facility that deals with mainly cancer research. Not heart defects. The other half of America, and many of which are not members of this site, roll their eyes at this kind of display which ultimately undermines the entire purpose of his story. Shame

It's so refreshing to see a grown man vulnerable, crying & open to sharing his personal story....also, going above and beyond calling out the healthcare persons/teams by name who made a difference in such an broad open forum when he could have used that time in a more self-serving way. Bravo  & support your local children's hospital!!
