Jimmy Kimmel Thanks Nurses Who Saved His Infant Son's Life

Nurses General Nursing

Jimmy and his wife Molly welcomed their second child, a precious baby boy named William John Kimmel, on Friday, April 21, 2017 at Cedars-Sinai Hospital. He appeared to be a normal healthy baby, until about 3 hours after he was born a very attentive nurse heard a murmur as she was doing assessments. Murmurs are common in newborns, but she also noticed he "was a bit purple". Another nurse in NICU checked him too and notified the doctor. Jimmy was terrified as the number of doctors, nurses, and equipment filled the room. A pediatric cardiology surgeon was called in. An echocardiogram revealed that baby Billy had a birth defect called Tetrology of Fallot with pulmonary atresia and would require surgery. Billy and Jimmy traveled by ambulance to Children's Hospital of Los Angeles to undergo a 3-hour surgery to open his heart valve. Although the surgery was a success, he will require another surgery in about 6 months to close the hole in his heart.

Jimmy is so thankful to the astute nurse who first noticed something was wrong and jumped into action. He thanked her by name as well as the rest of the team at the two hospitals.

This is such a good reminder as we go into Nurses Week that nurses are so important. Many times they are the first line of defense for the safety of patients. Never underestimate your value as a nurse.

In this video, Jimmy is very emotional as he shares this scary story of what happened to little Billy.

Actually NuGuyNurse2b ... whether or not the current Republican legislation actually supports the coverage of pre-existing conditions is a matter of debate. Many people claim it only pays "lip service" to the idea of coverage, but leaves it wide open to the states to define what type of coverage is provided and at what cost. Many experts believe that states will be free to offer only coverage that is prohibitively expensive for many of the people who need it most.

That's the whole point. Regardless about what Trump and the bill's sponsors say about wanting people with pre-existing conditions to be covered, the actual legislation does not provide any mechanism or guidelines as to what type of coverage would be available and how that coverage would be paid for -- leaving it wide open to the states to provide essentially "fake" coverage.

The "fake coverage" already exists under Obamacare - poor people are simply purchasing low premium/high deductible policies because it's mandated or else they're fined. The open to interpretation is simply that - people who are pre-judging the wording based on their emotional responses to the results of the election when any "lip service" that it is being accused of is no worse than what's currently out in the market.

My point is people bringing politics into a situation that wasn't political and shouldn't be political. Kimmel did worse for the current situation than any good by stoking people's already charged emotions when the simple fact is our health system is inherently broken and neither party has yet to come up with a plan to really fix it.

Lets all remember also what all David Lettermen did for nursing. After his open heart surgery in his first show back on air he not only stated that it was the nurses who saved his life but had all of his ICU nurses on the show. He did not have any of his doctors on stating these nurses were my saviours.

I thought of this, too. I remember him tearfully teasing one of the recognized individuals by saying, "this woman has seen me naked!"

He actually had doctors and nurses there too, but that doesn't take anything away from how nice it was!

I love that he thanked nurses! We know how many times we catch something that's not right- but the public doesn't. Jimmy Kimmel gets it. Blessings on nurses everywhere who skillfully love on patients and families in crisis.

It was a great tribute to the astute assessment skills of a neonatal nurse! I wonder if it was her own stethospcope?

Joy Behar, any opinion on that??!!

Such a touching story and so sweet how he names so many of the healthcare providers involved. Nurses are truly a blessing to so many people and I feel blessed to soon be a part of that.

However, while I am glad that the funding for NIH wasn't reduced (although I'm sure there is waste that could be cut) it's embarrassing that he has to use any circumstances to throw our President under the bus. NIH does a lot of good but they are a biomedical facility that deals with mainly cancer research. Not heart defects. The other half of America, and many of which are not members of this site, roll their eyes at this kind of display which ultimately undermines the entire purpose of his story. Shame

Huh?

The National Heart, Lung & Blood Institute and the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (institutes within the NIH) would like a word.

Also, Trump gave the okay for reimbursement cuts to facilities that serve populations that include undocumented patients -- this also includes the patients with cancer, heart disease, lung disease and many other problems (who happen to be from Mexico and are here illegally) that are treated most effectively at places like CHLA. These patients are covered under the Medi-Cal expansion, "Medi-Cal for All Children" and with the repeal of the ACA and the dawning of its replacement, that means cuts to this expansion and that means facilities that treat these patient populations are going to lose out big (and, for the record, CHLA is not a for-profit organization but celebrities can't donate to us indefinitely, as much as these donations help).

So, yeah, Trump can stand to be thrown under a bus. His willful ignorance (along with that of many of his supporters) of the complexities of the health care system in this country put him there.

Why do you say neonatal nurse? I thought it was a mother-baby nurse that noticed the problem.
