is nursing even a good career choice right now?

with the talk of lay offs, hiring freezes plus everyone and their mother wanting to be a nurse now has me thinking twice...

Specializes in Acute Care Psych, DNP Student.

At this point I would only recommend nursing school to someone who is willing to relocate to get his or her first job. New grads are having a horrific time getting jobs, and you never know when it can shift badly in your region.

Where I'm from, the nursing shortage was so bad, we teased that if you had a pulse and a license, you had a sign on bonus and job offer. That totally and completely changed. A lot of students from my graduating class of Dec. 2009 are still unemployed. I had multiple job offers, though, and it's just because I was willing to move for a job.

I tend to advise against nursing as well. Nursing is something so many have rushed to only to be left behind. Similar to how so many flocked to real estate licenses only to toss them into a drawer. The difference is the later is easy and inexpensive, and can be tossed aside. Once you get your nursing license, if you are unable to find a job, it's a major blow and a shock to your soul.

I agree with you if you really want to be a nurse let nothing prevent you ,but also be willing to be flexible concerning employment after school, personally for myself I have no problem with relocating .

Stay positive.. if you don't think you'll find a job after graduation, I guarantee you wont.

This is truth!!

Thank you Iodine 66 for the encouragement I will be starting school for nursing in October and i am 54 years old and I agree with your statement ,if you are a praying person keep me in your prayers that I will be an Professional and will enhance my love for health care .
